Has anyone used the Stoic Somnus 15 or 30 850fp bags? on 12/11/2011 23:20:28 MST Print View

They look like a great deal for the price, and 850fp. Although I guess they're not too much cheaper than the Montbell UL Hugger 3.

The 30 degree bag comes in at 22 oz for a long, which I need, while the 15 comes in at 35 for the long. I'm sort of tempted to grab a 30 for myself and a 15 for my girlfriend, who sleeps cold and see how we like them.
It looks like the top part has vertical baffles though? Never used a bag with vertical baffles.

I have the 15, actually I slept in it last night in some pretty crazy weather. I've used it down to about 20 and never been cold. Mine comes to 34oz in a sil stuff sack.

If it matters, I'm 6'5" and the long is huge with plenty of room to spare.

I actually like the vertical baffles, I feel like it keeps the down in the torso nice and even, instead of shifting to the sides and needing to be fluffed back up. But I toss and turn quite a bit, so maybe thats not a problem for more "serene" sleepers.

The pertex shell is great, last night i had a ton of spin drift blow into my pyramid (I don't use a bivy) and the bag stayed nice and dry even though snow froze to everything else.

I bought it because I needed to replace my HEAVY synthetic 20 degree bag, and this was on SAC. I can't find anthing bad to say about it :)

Thanks for the insight! I'm surprised there's not more info on them put there. They seem like a fantastic deal on sale.

Edit: how far can you compress the bag down? I'm looking at the 30, so it'll compress better, but I'm curious.

How do I do that? They're cheaper on backcountry right now than cleansnipe shows. Never used cleansnipe.

Sweet bag on 12/12/2011 13:42:37 MST Print View

I like mine. I used it for a week in the wrangells this summer! Did fine. I have the 30 degree bag. It did very well and kept me warm to about 25 with just baselayers and a hat on. It is the perfect summer bag for the money!!

Hi Folks,

Anyone use the newer version of the 30 degree bag?

Cheers,

Stephen

I ended up buying one. I love it. It's some pretty serious bang for the buck. Whether you love it will depend on how you do with the top zip, it's not for everyone.

I bought one when they were on Steep and Cheap about a 3 weeks ago, and will echo above posts, it's a dang nice bag even at retail price. BC still has them for $210, which is a freaking steal.
If you can tolerate the center zip (it's not as hard as it sounds), this is a really solid option for a 3-season bag.
There's a good bit of chat about it on the thread in gear deals subforum from when it was popping up on SaC.
My observations based on one night in the backyard:
Pretty accurate temp rating, good construction, roomy but not big, pertex shell beads condensation well, and breathes nicely. Mine weighs 22.9oz (650g)
My one big gripe is actually minor- the vertical baffles allow the down in the chest area to migrate to the hood, which must be shaken back down into the chest.

Thansk Ben,

I sent you a Pm earlier.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply, I hear what you are saying about the vertical baffles, its definitley one to watch out for.

Besides that do you think it suffers from any cold spots?

Cheers both,

Stephen

Cold Spots on 05/08/2012 12:02:31 MDT Print View

Once the down is shaken out evenly, mine has no underfilled spots. Of course that varies by bag. I can't find a fill weight anywhere, only the power, so I don't know if I got a 'good one' or not. Mine weighs .5oz over semi-vague claimed 1.4 lb weight. Total weight 22.9oz
Climbing inside the bag in daylight shows that the lower part of the bag is maybe a bit more filled than the upper, as it's 'darker' down there, even with my head stuck in the feet. The torso seems evenly filled when properly distributed, and I was comfortable at 30-31*F the night I spent outside. I wore silk-weight poly baselayers and wool socks. Pulling in a Mont Bell UL down sweater at 3am to pre-warm it got me toasty.
I'm getting used to the vertical baffles, I can actually shake almost all of the hood down into the torso (front and back) and kind of create a mild over-fill. Then wear a good hat and have a possibly slightly warmer bag. Maybe it's psychosomatic.

I see no reason that with planning (warm drinks and a water bottle at your feet) and extra clothes this couldn't be pushed into the low 20's.

...Holy crap, I write too much.

I have the Stoic Somnus 30 and I got it from Steep and Cheap or one of those flash deal sites. I thought the performance to weight to price ratio was excellent. I have used it twice on the past 2 months camping and it has performed each time. Temps were around 30-40F degrees. The first night, I was overdressed so things got a bit warm. The most recent night, up in Big Pine Mt (California), I was woefully under prepared for the cold weather and wind. It kept me nice and warm but not uncomfortably so. I have thought about upgrading (even though my bag is brand new), but I can't bring myself to pay hundreds more for a minuscule weight difference. My model is red but it looks like the version on Backcountry weighs 20oz (1 lb, 4oz). The REI Igneo which won multiple Gear of the Year awards weighs 31 oz. You can get a quilt (enLIGHTened Equipment Revalation X) in regular, 6 foot, and it weighs 19.25 oz. So you save 0.75 oz, get a quilt, and probably pay the same I paid for the Somnus on sale (I can't remember the price to be honest).

Hi Guys,

I am a bit on the fence on the bag, I have been offered a never used one by a BPL member for 135 plus shipping.

The weight of it comes close to some of WM's warmer bags but at at that price its hard to knock:-)

Cheers,

Stephen

get it on 05/08/2012 15:20:34 MDT Print View

get it and use the money you saved elsewhere.

I have had the 15, and still have the 30. Fantastic bags... especially at the low prices you can get them for. I think I paid $125 for my new 30 degree.

Are they as high quality as WM or FF? No. Do I really notice the difference? Not really. It has kept me warm at 20 degrees, and I am sure I could push it further using a VB and some better clothing.

Cheers Matthew,

I am a notoriously cold sleep and had some issues with a WM Summerlite a few summers ago, at that price I could keep for car camping if it did not work out.

Happy days

Somnus 30* on 05/08/2012 17:04:55 MDT Print View

I've got the Somund 30* (older model i guess, since it is silver/red combo). Great bag all around. Very light, compressible and inexpensive.

The shell seems thinner than my Marmot or Rab bags, but that also makes it lighter.

Great bag and a great deal.

I'm inclined to believe that the Stoic wt. is a typo and should be 1.4lb, or 1 lb 7oz as listed on the stoic website. I can verify that the black/blue model weighs 1.4lb. If anything the red/black with 800FP would be ever-so-slightly heavier than the 850FP Black/blue one.

So that quilt is a fair bit lighter (a little over 3oz) than the stoic. A quilt, however just doesn't work for some people.

I have tried a quilt for 6 nights over 3 trips of varying condition (all above the quilts rating) and just did not get on with it.
