BPL's community has suffered a great loss with the passing of George Matthews. This is from his son Chad.


George Matthews passed away last Wednesday, November 30th, 2011. His life was cut short around 5:30pm EST after a quick 20 minute run before it got dark.

He was a GREAT father and lived his life for everyone else. He enjoyed talking about his passion (backpacking and running) with everyone on Backpacking Light and I wanted to let you all know.

He will be missed...

I'm in shock.
While I never met George in person, I felt I was coming to know him online. He was part of our Grand Canyon Group and I was looking forward to running with him this April.
We'll miss you George.

My sympathy to his family.
I've always enjoyed his contributions here...This is really sad. I was looking forward to running with him.

This is really awful news.

George was a valued contributor to this community, I always clicked on a George Matthews post.

I never met him, but I'm certain I would have enjoyed his company.

This is distressing news to us all. George was a gentleman, he shared his good insights (and his fun artistry), and he has been a valued member of BPL. His contributions will be missed by many of us.

And as David Lutz said, "I never met him, but I'm certain I would have enjoyed his company."

Bad news.

Whenever I saw his posts I always checked his avatar. He always had some monkey face rendition, or some kind of little alien-gnomes, and IIRC his feet we his avatar for a while! (VFFs right?)

You will be missed, George!

I'm thinking maybe a group picture at the end of the run with a banner stating:

"BPL.R2R2R.2012 / We Ran For George" (or something to that effect)

All runners could sign it and send it to the family.

Just a thought worth considering.

Ach, what terrible news. George was one of the members whose sense of humor and constant turning the seriousness of threads on their heads made so many conversations so much easier to bear and made many of us stop and look at ourselves. The space where his voice spoke here in the forums will be sorely missed.

I'm so sorry to hear that. He will be missed by our little community and my thoughts are with his family. His posts, especially on threads that were becoming confrontational, always provided a delightful and much needed change in tempo. Let's all think of him next time we are out in the hills.
