Grandpa's best advice on 11/15/2011 21:32:38 MST Print View

Growing up, we all got those little gems from Grandpa... Got a favorite? Maybe one that keeps popping back in your mind from time to time? Something like "Don't pi$$ into the wind" or "Don't squat with your spurs on" or "One 'aw crap' cancels a thousand "attaboys'"?

"I'll have your nose above your chin!"
That's what PaPa would say when you done wrong.
Of course.. it never occured to kids that our nose already was above our chin so the "threat" was always enough to stem the tide of youthful rambunciousness.

You can only think with one head at a time.

I like the three W's. I am sad that I could only find them by divorcing my wife but my bunny makes a better room mate, all things considered.

I got only two pieces of advice:

1. Men should be masculine, and women should be feminine.

2. Always take a handkerchief on a date.

I have found the former advice not particularly useful, since gender roles have changed considerably in the last few decades.

As for the latter, I carry a handkerchief everywhere I go, despite the fact that I haven't been on a "date" since I married my wife 38 years ago.

If you put it on the ground, it can't fall down.

Told to me about a guitar...but applies to so many things!

Pop's advice on 11/17/2011 08:07:12 MST Print View

WE called our paternal grandfather "Pop".

Pop had two bronze stars, two purple hearts and his division liberated Dachau. He also worked hard all his life, never raised his voice and always seemed to be smiling.

His advice to his three grandsons growing up when we became rambunctious (and later) or stubborn about something? "Relax. Take it easy".

Good advice. Have to remind myself of that....

Good one Paul. The way my Grandad put it was:

"Better 10 minutes late in this life than 50 years early in the next."
