I am considering wearing injinji synth/merino liner toesocks with thicker injinji merino toe socks on top this winter. Possibly also smartwool toe socks over injinji liners. I was wondering if anyone layers this way. I got medium for both layers. Seems like wearing a regular sock over toesocks would ruin their purpose.

I backpack and hike exclusively in Tevas. I always wear a pair of Injinjis. For colder trips, I'll add a silk liner (non-toe) and then an expedition weight smart wool hiking sock over the liner, for a total of three layers. Seems to work well for me.

I haven't tried it, but more than one layer of toe socks seems like it might compress the toes a little too much for good blood circulation in the cold.

I think the purpose of wearing toe socks in regular shoes is usually just to prevent blisters from toes rubbing together. If so, then just one pair of toe socks is enough.

I wear two pair of Injinji (ultra-thin liner, then nuwool) toe socks very often with my Chacos. NO circulation issues for me whatsoever, even when at rest for a considerable amount of time, though I do have fairly low-volume feet. Both pair are sized correctly for my feet (mens size 11 foot = Large size Injinjis) Very comfortable, with no blisters, no constriction.
