When I studied RN's charts from a few year's back, I realized he had charted a basic linear progression that was anchored by some subjective assumptions. So, I figured I could map CLO values by temperature & activity, and use some kind of progression based on my own experiences/comfort zones:
Temp Sleep Sit Fish BP 10 9.10 5.56 4.15 3.00 15 8.45 5.18 3.85 2.75 20 7.80 4.80 3.55 2.50 25 7.15 4.42 3.25 2.25 30 6.50 4.04 2.95 2.00 35 5.85 3.66 2.65 1.75 40 5.20 3.28 2.35 1.50 45 4.55 2.90 2.05 1.25 50 3.90 2.52 1.75 1.00 55 3.25 2.14 1.45 0.75 60 2.60 1.76 1.15 0.50 65 1.95 1.38 0.85 0.25 70 1.30 1.00 0.55 - 75 0.65 0.62 0.25 - 80 0.00 0.24 - - 0.65 0.38 0.3 0.25
Note: Even though I used RN's starting points, I soon realized I could set -0- at where **I** was comfortable. I then messed around with the relative progressions based on my own personal experiences on when I would throw on/take off add'l clothing.
Example: At 30 degrees, I need a CLO of 6.5 for sleeping, 4.0 for sitting, 2.95 for fishing and 2.0 for hiking. The next chart below simply demonstrates my layering requirements for the relative temps based on activity levels.
