Ultralight two person tent which can accommodate two large neoair pads on 10/18/2011 12:16:04 MDT Print View

I'm looking for a very lightweight, not-too-expensive fully enclosed tent which can fit two people sleeping on large neo air mattresses (25 in X 77 in) as well as their backpacks. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Six Moon Has the Lunar Duo and "The Haven"

I have last years version of The Haven and two 27" wide pads barely fit width wise, plus plenty of room at the head and foot to store your gear.

I believe the Duo and the new version of the Haven has a bathtub around 54" in width, which is perfect. Any wider and it gets harder to find places to pitch.

I would start by looking at tents from Six Moons and TarpTent. You really can't go wrong with gear from either one of those companies. There are a bunch of other options out there, but I think that is a great place to start.

I like the SMD duo. I'm looking for the same thing and I liked that best. The other options is waiting for the tarptent stratospire

Maybe not ultralight, but... on 10/18/2011 21:36:34 MDT Print View

My wife and I bought an REI Quarter Dome T2 Plus with the specific reason of having a tent that would fit both of our large NeoAirs. Just finished a week in the Grand Canyon with it and I was very happy with it (that was our first trip in it). Headroom while sitting is outstanding and the two doors are a great plus, too. With both pads in there, it's wall to wall pad, so if I happen roll off mine, hers it there to continue on to! It's a bit heavy, but a substantial weight savings over the TNF tent it is replacing. Check it out.

UL Tent with two Large NeoAirs on 10/18/2011 21:40:25 MDT Print View

TarpTent Rainshadow 2 could maybe fit three in a pinch.

TarpTent Rainshadow 2 could maybe fit three in a pinch.

Rainshadow 2:
* floor is long enough for size large neoair (I've used it for that)
* floor is 64" wide at the foot end ... could fit 3 regular neoairs but not three large
* floor is 78" wide at the head end ... three large neoair's would fill that

O.P. asked about 2 large neoairs and two packs ... that'd depend a bit on how large the packs are after removing shelter, pad and sleeping bag/quilt

I've had a Rainshadow 2 for 5 years and everyone who's shared it with me agreed that it is luxuriously roomy for two people ... workable for 3 but crowded.

I also agree, the Rainshadow 2 is definitely roomy enough for two large neoair plus room to spare. I consider it a three person tent.

My Rainshadow 2 is fits three no problem. My pack is empty and under my feet when I hike solo using my TT Sublite or MDL Solomid.

Tarptent Rainshadow on 10/19/2011 16:33:11 MDT Print View

The Tarptent Rainshadow 2 is designed as a _three_ person tent. The "2" after the name refers to the model number, not the tent capacity. (I agree that it's very confusing!) I have one and it will comfortably hold me, two grandchildren and my 75-lb. mostly Labrador retriever, including all four packs.

It will certainly take those 2 large NeoAir pads with plenty of room left over!

Tent on 10/20/2011 09:42:52 MDT Print View

The Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3 (3.4 lbs) is called a 3 person tent but it's really more like a 2.5 person tent and well suited to handling something like 2 large NeoAir's. It's about 56-62" wide. So this (or the upcoming Easton Kilo 3P @ 3.0 lbs and $499) would be about your lightest choice if you're looking at double wall tents that use poles (as opposed to hiking poles). This is going to totally undermine the credibility of my post, but I do have a used one for sale for cheap...say $250 (vs. $450 new).

Hi Dan

I'm in the same search for a ultralight tent that can fit to large thermarest pads. If the tent is still for sale I'm ready to jump on it :-)

I have a Rainshadow 2 also. It is pretty much perfect for 2 with pads of any size. You start getting cramped at 3 but it is doable if you have to.

Nemo Meta 2P is heavier than some of the tents mentioned previously, but it is very strong, roomy, and an overall excellent tent.

TT Scarp 2 on 12/17/2011 20:51:19 MST Print View

The Tarptent Scarp 2 is shown with THREE pads squeezed in when the floor is pulled out fully. I'm sure it would accomodate two wide pads with the floor in regular mode. Great tent, lots of options.
