Storing gear when living in warm, humid places on 10/14/2011 23:41:45 MDT Print View

I am curious as to how those of you living in warm, humid places store gear, or protect gear so that it doesn't get ruined from mold, etc.

I live in Japan, where summers can be very warm and humid. As a result, I've had clothes (suits, shoes) destroyed, furniture, blankets, duvets infested--all from mold.

I do a fairly decent job of protecting my high-end ski gear by storing it in thick plastic bags along with dessicators to try to keep moisture levels low. But I can't store everything like this.

This is one of the reasons I've been hesitant to purchase a new sleeping bag--one summer in storage and it'll become a sponge for mold.

I should also mention that I am extremely allergic to mold spores, hence my motivation to nip this organism in the bud.

I know there are a few of you living in environments like this, as well as some living in Japan. I would appreciate hearing how you prevent or control the growth of mold in your prized gear.

Thanks...

I think you are going to have to store every thing like this.
Nanga also recommends you store their sleeping bags in plastic bags with dissicant over the humid summer months.

Air conditioner and a dehumidifier. I also like to keep the furnace fan on when the humidity is high outside. Keeps the inside air moving and levels everything out through each level of the house. I never allow the inside humidity to reach higher then 55%. I target 50% though. 60% and higher humidity mold can grow.
