HH 2 oz. Jackets at SAC on 12/18/2006 06:55:04 MST Print View

Steep and Cheap has Helly Hansen Zone jackets for about $66. The listed weight is 2 ounces, they have pit zips, a hood, and are supposed to be waterproof/breathable. It seems that there must be a catch, but, at the very least, the weight and features are advertised consistently on other sites (so SAC didn't make a mistake).

Dang! Missed it!

But I find it hard to believe that a wp/b jacket with hood, full zip and pit zips can weigh just 1.9 oz! Any owners out there who care to comment?

HH Zone Jkt. on 12/19/2006 05:56:58 MST Print View

I managed to get one before they sold out. Haven't received it yet, but plan on giving it some testing when it arrives. I agree- a WP/B jacket with that feature set for 2oz. seems unlikely to me, especially one that isn't a "household name" among the UL crowd, but we shall see...

The plot thickens..
SAC and a HH customer rep. are sticking by the 59g weight claim.

"Thanks for letting us know about your concern about the Zone Jacket you recently purchased. Apparently you're under the impression that the jacket you bought has been advertised as the wrong weight. I don't know where you
received that information but I checked the Helly Hansen home site and it gave the same information as we have on our site. I also took the time to call our Helly Hansen contact and they pulled out one of their dealer catalogs they have and also verfied the weight of that jacket.
If there is anything else we can do for you please let us know.

..So I am eagerly awaiting my "59g" jacket with full zip, three pockets, pit zips, full hood, adjustable hood, waist string, etc.. does it defy the laws of physics? This could replace a quiver of other windshirts and rain jackets..

Anyone received theirs yet and can confirmt the 10oz weight we all expect?

"If there is anything else we can do for you please let us know."

This line makes me want to write to them and use very small words.

Like... I dunno...

"Yes, there is something else you can do. You can stop "verifying" the weight by looking at references that are already in question, and put your product on a SCALE!!!!!!

Try doing some Customer Service you numbtard!"

JR and PJ, re:Helly Hansen 2 oz. Jackets at SAC on 12/20/2006 02:40:18 MST Print View

Exactly JR; it's circular reasoning. Using the source I'm sugggesting is wrong to tell me it is correct. I need to unleash our man p.j. on these guys; he could pepper about a dozen customer service reps with technical reasons why the jacket could (or could not) weigh 59g, until they scream for mercy and weigh the darn thing. But instead of calling out the 'big guns', I'll just wait quietly for the jacket to arrive.

i really don't know much of anything about materials. i'm just jumping into this Thread "midstream", so to speak since i notice a reference to my inits in one of your Posts.

i don't know if this observation has been made already, so please excuse me if this is "reruns", so to speak.

i do, however, have it from a good source that the jacket in question does actually weigh 59g - on the moon. sorry, i don't really have anything substantive to offer on this one.

here's why i think the weight is in error: does anyone really think that a full-featured 59g jacket would have escaped the notice of DrJ and I rest my case.

I know they had an incorrect weight (off by a mere 1lb 8oz.) on a Sierra Designs 0 degree sleeping bag a couple of weeks ago.

I checked the SD website and it listed it as 1.6oz more the on S&C. I also checked for the weight and got the 1#8oz figure.

I posted a comment on S&C and got 'flamed' not by them but by other posters.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Your "flame" reference only confirms my suspicion that the SAC website has spawned a tribe of junkies, who for no other reason sit around buying stuff at "great prices". I suppose everyone needs a hobby and an identity.

FYI - They're trying to run through 100 deals today. There were a couple I would have liked to get but missed. Keeping my eye out for some smartwool or Ibex or Icebreaker shirts...

Hey Joshua and Justin,
Try They have some pretty good deals on Smartwool clothes currently. I didn't search for Icebreaker or Ibex. Best of luck snagging a good deal.

Yup, that's the sister / sponsor site to SAC. It's hard to swallow "only" 25% off, when SAC deals are like 60% off.

Call me cheap, but then again, I'm in no rush to get one so I don't mind riding the SAC train for a while. ;)

Then again, Dicks Sporting Goods just started carrying Smartwool clothes and I've got a 100$ gift cert burning a hole in my pocket that I earned through a fitness initiative at work.

The Mars jacket is Helly Hansens 2.2 oz.jacket. I have one that I use for Running, MTN biking or just for a lightweight layer when I travel it packs down to nothing. N

The Zone is a 2.5 layer full stretch WP / Breathable jacket that is built to the E-Lite standard it weighs in around 20 oz in a mens Med. It's light just not 2.2 oz. light like the Mars.

Re: Re: Ugly SAC stuff on 12/21/2006 13:07:37 MST Print View

Hehehe-- fashion has it's price. They are trying to close the stuff out. I can't tell you how many times I've seen an eye-popping price on line only to find the only size left is XS or XXXXXXL. There's no free lunch :)

Now that jacket would look real nice on the right female form. The color of those shorts might be appealing to other cultures-- check out the Jamaican flag and you'll see what I mean.

I've learned to expand the color of my wardrobe via my thrift store wanderings, and in most cases for the better. Even my wife thinks so!

I got a pair of Salomon GTX Mid boots last night for $27. Can't complain about that. THe color choices were mousey brown or mousey gray. Woow woow!

My size small arrived today. on 12/21/2006 16:39:49 MST Print View

my size small weighed in at 13.6 oz. I was thinking that i would definitely keep it if it weighed 10 oz. or less. but it's not much lighter than my golite jacket. I'm still debating whether to return it.

the fabric seems nice, and really light. but there is a lot of extranious things going on that i'm not thrilled about. on the other hand, it's pretty stylish. I really like the slim fit.

Re: my bad on 12/21/2006 18:03:20 MST Print View

No Problems, how do you get 2 oz and 13 oz for the same item?

Perhaps HH should be saying "our bad" or ... maybe they should have said 12 oz. or maybe as a Norwegian company they intended to say 200 gram, which is 7 oz. Or maybe ????

I think I will stick to my Montane and GoLite gear
