Suggestions on how to set up a Kelty Canyon Tarp? on 09/08/2011 19:34:32 MDT Print View

Canyon Tarp Side viewI just dug out a tarp from my gear closet that I can find very little info on. It is huge 17 x 17, has catenary cuts, and weighs under 2.5# It is different from the Kelty noah tarps in its shape. Does anyone have any ideas on how it might set this up for 3-4 people. I tried using the grommets on the ends of the ridge line and tried hiking poles and then Kelty 60" poles to set it up. Both methods left the tarp up into the weather on the ends. .

I am open to suggestions. It seems to be pretty rare. I couldn't find one anywhere for sale, and I would like to figure out how to make it useful. It sets up very tautly and has a bunch of tie outs. Any ideas? Possible configurations?

Better Way to Pitch a Tarp? on 09/11/2011 17:30:10 MDT Print View

Does anyone have any idea if there is a way to set this up to be more covered in a rainstorm, so that it could cover 3-4 people. I have tried it a few different ways, pitched down low on hiking poles, or up tied to trees. I know there are inventive ways to set up a rectangular tarp, does this design completely restrict the possible ways to set it up?

Robert,

Most cat tarps are limited to one or two ways to set up. The exreme cat cuts on your tarp will limit your options. Some of the minds on this site may offer you a solution, though.

Good luck,
Todd

Set up Options on 09/11/2011 19:43:59 MDT Print View

I realize that my options may be very limited, but I would love to be able to use or modify this tarp to be able to be used for shelter for 3-4 people. I have considering adding perimeter no-see-um netting and also cutting some back on the sides so that there were flatter sides, and it could be staked down closer to the ground.

I won one many years ago. It's shape is really weird- particularly that 2-3 foot section shown in the front of your picture. It just sits in my gear closet.

Sorry- that's not very useful. At least you know you're not alone.

Hammock on 09/12/2011 17:27:58 MDT Print View

I have thought about using it for a hammock, but it is kinda big (17'long) , and they don't make 3 person hammocks, yet : ) It does have a good shape for a hammock though. thanks

Hi I have this same tarp Ive been using it a dozen or more times a year for river trips since 2001. Its a nice light tarp. I set it up different for every site I stay at it;s so versatile.

I have a long center line I run with two loop knots that suspend the ends of the roof. The loops are tied a little farther apart than tarp is long so the line sags a little so you can hang LED lanterns, towels, cloth etc. under the tarp.
I use the narrow side as an awning and the wide back can be set up with a more vertical wall half way down the side so its into the wind, use the guy outs in the middle.

It is a picnic shelter, IMHO, and useless for a sleeping shelter. I could see using it with a group for eating and lounging, food prep, etc. I would cut my losses and sell it and go to something better suited to keeping you protected in rain and wind.
