Why so few reviews of the BPL Cocoon Pullover? on 09/01/2011 09:16:38 MDT Print View

Is there a reason that the newer BPL Cocoon Pullover hasn’t been reviewed by many BPL readers yet? Weren’t there some questions about the manufacturer’s stated CLO value and how well the insulation, which I understand Ryan played a hand in developing, will perform over time? I got the impression from several threads that Ryan’s insulation could represent an important advance in synthetic insulation, but I’ve not seen any subsequent threads on the issue. Have people been sharing their experience with the pullover and I’ve just missed their posts? If so, could someone direct me to a few of those threads? Thanks

I bought one of these last winter when they were on sale and I love it. I used it for cross country skiing last winter in 10 below conditions in combination with an REI Powerstretch fleece and was perfectly warm. It has been my go to jacket all summer for backpacking. That thing is warm, in fact, sometimes too warm for summer conditions. I should mention that I grew up in Upstate New York about 60 miles from the Canadian border where 20 below was not uncommon. On the weather channel look for "Lake Effect Snow" just east of the Great Lakes. That was me. I can tolerate cold more than some of my friends from California, where I live now. I also should mention that I don't like to compress things down to the singularity before the big bang. I think over compressing destroys some of the insulating properties of gear. It is also very water repellant. My girlfriend wore it as a rain jacket once when she forgot her rain gear. BTW, what happened to the BPL store? Do they sell gear anymore?

It is my favorite piece of gear, bar none. Keeps me warm around camp to the high 30's, compresses well, and is an integral part of my sleep system. The hood is divine. I am really sorry to see these go away. It has a gossamer thin shell so no suing to bushwack....;)

I'm with David on this--my 2006 Cocoon hoody is my favorite piece of gear. I am curious as to how the 2006 model compares with the newer Cocoon. Does anyone have both versions, and if so, how do they compare as far as weight and warmth?

As for the BPL Gear Shop--it closed in July. There is an extensive thread that discussed it, but it might have been available only to MLIFE members (I'm not sure).

Gary, I must have one of the later Cocoons, so I can't compare to an earlier version. It is the only "puffy" insulation I bring in the summer. Sorry to hear about the BPL store. Is it shut down for good? I'm only a yearly member and I was away from my computer a lot this summer, so I wasn't able to keep up with things.

Yep I love mine. Very warm. Really light especially when it includes a hood. My only gripe is that I find the elastic around the waist a bit tight when the rest of the jacket is pretty loose. Causes it to ride up my back a bit.

Ryan's insulation on 03/02/2012 09:18:09 MST Print View

Has anyone been able to compare Ryan's insulation with Primaloft, in terms of warmth and durability?
