Great report, Chris.

"...this was my third overnight trip turned day hike in recent months." I'm glad I'm not the only one. It seems like the last couple hikes I did in that area turned out the same way for me. On the bright side of things maybe next time you have a free day (as opposed to a full weekend) you can just finish the half of the planned trip.
