How do you prevent pole punctures in your pack? on 08/18/2011 21:31:05 MDT Print View

Just looking for some ideas. I have a tarp tent that utilizes a couple of poles and also stakes. I'm afraid that packing them in the silynylon bag with the tent will puncture the bag or the tent itself. Taking them out, I'm worried the poles would puncture my pack. Don't really have a good way to lash them on the outside of the pack either.

What's your solutions?

My shepherd's hook stakes go into a small bag that rolls up inside my tarp. There are only two segmented fiberglas poles snapped together by rubber band. My plastic ground sheet is rolled up around the poles, and that goes into a cuben fiber stuff sack with the tarp.

I haven't had any trouble with poles or stakes. I roll them up in the tent, the way it was packed when sent to me. I am, of course, very careful with them.

I've never had a problem. If you're really concerned, pack your poles on top, somewhere your stakes or poles won't have weight on top of them pushing them into fabric.

What I've done in similar situations is make a sheathe or cap out of duct tape to cover up the pointy bit.

Zpacks makes some really nice cuben fiber stake and pole bags. I use the stake bags and pack it with the tent/tarp in a silnylon bag and have had good success. The thick cuben fiber is very tough, but light.
