Hi all...

I'm keen to drop a lot of weight and am trying to decide on the best options, pretty much figured out what I want to do but could use some input...

I generally hike on Vancouver Island so, wet and windy.

What I started with:

Hubba Hubba (5lb+) - been using this for car camping :\

What I tried next: a heavy tarp/bivy combo. Super comfy but a bit heavy!

Integral Design Unishelter Expedition Bivy - 40oz
Granite Gear White Lightnin 10*10 - 22oz
MHW Typhoon Jacket and Marmot Precip Full Zip rain gear - 28oz (!)

Total weight of shelter, tarp and rain protection... 90oz!!

What I want to move to:

Tarptent Moment - 32oz
Integral Design Poncho Tarp - 10oz

Total shelter, tarp and rain - 42oz

I am not specifically looking at a bivy here only because I'd like to set up the relatively small silponcho up as a gear/cooking shelter...

Am I on the right track, and is there better gear for this climate?

Thanks for any input!

I used the Moment on the WCT and it didn't rain but I was drenched in condensation every night. My take would be something like an MLD Mid with either an inner to create a double walled barrier or an MLD 7oz SL bivy with the full head net. This way it would be easy to pitch in the rain, your 'floor' would be kept dry, and you would be able to pack a wet shelter away from the inner tent or bivy.

An alternative might be something like a Scarp that sets up both inner and outer together and also has a barrier to condensation but it may be too much tent.

My 2 cents.

Sounds like a good plan to me. No experience in that climate myself, but we get plenty of humidity and rain in the Midwest/Appalachian US too. I like the Moment. I have the inner liner, but will probably only use it in colder weather
