Here's a few more pictures from OR show. The inner is all mesh now instead of the regular UL2 that has nylon half way up.

Wow look at all that headroom [rolls eyes]. Nice to see they are pushing the weights lower, but the gotta make it bigger than that to call it a 2 person tent. It should be a nice solo shelter.

The UL3 is barely wide enough for two. At 52", that's still a bit snug for two people. Sure like the weight though. This tent should be more appropriately labeled the UL1.5 Platinum.

They still haven't learned that front entrances are very poor design

$500.00!?! Are they using real platinum in there somewhere?

One of my favorite things about the original is the fabric walls. It is ok for 2 when sleeping, just snug when both sitting.

I really like the high sides on my Fly Creek UL1. I thought they were a really nice improvement over my old Seedhouse. It seems Big Agnes is going backwards by returning to the full mesh tent IMO.

I actually don't get the sizing and think the UL2 would make an expensive 1 person shelter. It's only 10 inches wider than my UL1 (the UL1 is 42 inches at the door) and the UL2 Platinum is basically the same weight as my UL1. That's an expensive bit of real estate. If somebody could manage to use it as intended (for two people), then maybe the UL2 Platinum would be worth it.

Nice!

...except for the price
...except that it's a solo tent, unless you're a snuggling couple

If it weren't for the price, I'd consider replacing my Moment with this.

Yeah - I hate the front entry with no way to prevent rain coming in.

Realistically, this is a dumb exercise in weight reduction. It is barely lighter than the regular Fly Creek but $150 more. 'We' maybe anal about weight, but for that price it should have a cuben fly and they should have simply called it the FLy Creek UL1 XL.

What would you guys recommend as an alternative. I am looking for a 2 person tent. I don't need a deluxe suite but definitely want it comfortable. Weight is a concern but also can't afford a $500 tent.

options on 08/10/2011 21:03:37 MDT Print View

Some 2 person options would be:

Easton Kilo - very light, but quite small
REI Quarterdome T2 - Nice tent, very affordable, not the lightest (~3.4 lbs) but the price is sweet ($199?)
MSR Carbon Reflex 2 - Nice...a bit small and a bit expensive though ($400?)
BIg Agnes Fly Creek UL3 - The 3 person version is spacious for 2 and 3.4 lbs.
TarpTent Scarp2 or the new Tarptent StratoSpire2 - Affordable neat designs

If you're thinking of this as a 1 person tent, then other options would be:

HMG Echo I - Awesome, Pricey, Not much headroom, Bomber
TT StratoSpire1 or Notch - Great double wall designs
TT Moment - If you're thinking single wall
MSR Carbon Reflex 1 - Pricey but you can find deals online

Tarptent Double Rainbow on 08/10/2011 22:22:44 MDT Print View

I would recommend the Tarptent Double Rainbow. I'm 6-4 and my hiking partner is 6-2 and there is plenty of room. It costs $260, weighs 41oz or about 2.6lbs and has side entries with vestibules. It can also be freestanding using two trekking poles.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I am new here so it really helps when people narrow down choices for me!

Not worth the Premium on 01/03/2012 13:57:12 MST Print View

I picked up a BA Fly Creek 2 (HumbleOutdoors ~$315 with a free footprint), so platinum edition carries a platinum premium.
