Vegan ya say? Did you know that the Vegan Con is being held in PDX this August? Portland is a mecca for vegans just saying (I am attending the Con, it is sold out). Anyhow, there are tons of places to eat in PDX for her. Literally so many places. You have nothing to worry about!

Bang for buck beach, need info stat! on 08/03/2011 15:53:47 MDT Print View

Ok we're here!

We're going to eat dinner in the city then drive to the coast, but I need to know which beach has the best views (off a cliff? of rocks in the water/surf?) for the least amount of hiking. We flew all day and are tired, not looking to pound out 2-3 miles to see a vista. Anything you can park and watch a beautiful sunset? Where would you go?

Cape Mears on 08/03/2011 15:57:14 MDT Print View

Cape Mears looks to be about the same driving distance as Canon Beach from Portland. And it looks like you can drive right up to the cliffs, no? (Looking at Google Maps and the pictures people have linked)

Yes, there is a state park right there at the Cape. Even the little lighthouse is right off the parking lot :-)
Also, right down the road is multiple beaches. The easiest to access is Oceanside there. You can park and walk within a few feet!
Same with Canon Beach.

Sure, Cape Mears

Drive to Tillamook, then follow signs to Cape Mears. There's a lighthouse, state park, nice views of ocean from cliffs.

Take the road South along the top of the cliffs and you can loop back to Tillamook, nice views of ocean and places you can stop and look.

Where are you staying tonight?

Back in Portland

Go for a walk in Laurelhurst Park if you have time. Nothing amazing but nice. There's a pond with ducks.

Cape Meares on 08/03/2011 23:14:45 MDT Print View

Well today we saw the Chinese Garden, Powells and Voodoo Donuts and we made it to Cape Meares, just didn't see much of it (darn fog! :p). It was 62F and windy while there. Now we're at The Bye and Bye (hipster bar, getting late night vegan meatball subs that were recommended). Tomorrow we hit up the falls!

awesome! on 08/04/2011 00:18:10 MDT Print View

enjoy the relative lack of humidity and perfection that is this time of the year in the NW. forgot the coast can be pretty foggy a lot..even when it is perfect a few miles inland. Bummer bought that. Hit Council Crest (right up the hill from downtown) for a sure-fire sunset, or any of the buttes/mounts to the east side of town (rocky butte, mount tabor, powell butte). If you go to council crest make sure to stand in the true middle (exactly on the plaque) of the circle at the top and whisper a secret you want to come true (its a tradition). hehe

Breakfast on 08/04/2011 11:05:55 MDT Print View

You are staying blocks away from my house! Crazy.

Try breakfast at Paradox (Belmont & 35thish [by the Avalon]) they are totally vegan.
The Cricket Cafe on Belmont is really good

Better food, but not totally vegan is
The Jam
Cup & Saucer
Bread & Ink

They are all on Hawthorne (Jam and B&I are really good)

If you want good fish Try Hawthorne Fish House. TOTALLY vegan.
Bring a stool for the line if you go to ?por que no? If you go there and get tired of waiting- cross the street to the Eastside Deli and get a huge vegan meat sandwich for $6. MMMMM....

PS: Portland is a great city in which to start drinking.

EDIT: Hawthorne Fish house is not vegan, but totally gluten-free.

"PS: Portland is a great city in which to start drinking."

Amen. My wife is from Portland and I thank her every time we come back to see her parents and friends. Greatest breweries and beer selection around. We also have to go through a multi-hour, "Should we move back to Portland?" conversation twice a year.
