words of wisdom on 07/26/2011 20:50:16 MDT Print View

I was talking with my husband Bryan this evening about our favorite sayings that also contain some wisdom. His favorite one is "you can't afford the cheap stuff".

What are your favorite words of wisdom?

As a traveler, I like St. Augustine's quote: "The world is a book and those who don't travel read only a page".

Feel free to substitute travel with backpack. :)

Advice on 07/27/2011 05:06:22 MDT Print View

My old man only ever gave me two pieces of advice:

1. "Always take a handkerchief on a date,"

2. And, well, shoot, the other one is unpublishable.

My favorite, however, is the pessimist's variant of the old saying, "A walk of 1,000 miles begins with a single step":

I could cure cancer. I could conquer the world. I could bring joy and happiness to all the people around me. If only I could get up out of this chair . . . .

words on 07/27/2011 06:14:09 MDT Print View

1. ( For Doug) "..You wanted a bike....now pedal! ""
This is the Italian version of making your bed and sleeping in it. Heard it from my dad for EVERYTHING:
2. "If you are going through hell....keep going."

3. "Nothing human is alien to me."
4."You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts;
And when you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart you live in your lips, and sound is a diversion and a pastime.
And in much of your talking, thinking is half murdered.
For thought is a bird of space, that in a cage of words may indeed unfold its wings but cannot fly." Kahlil Gibran in The Prophet.

5. "If you can't say anything nice, don't.."Ahhh. Should of thought of this one yesterday.

"This too will pass." (helps me get through bad times and sobers me when things are going unexpectingly well)

"There is no past, present or future. These are only stubburn illusions to which we cling."

Ben Franklin on 07/27/2011 08:59:26 MDT Print View

A few from ol' Ben:

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither."

"Beer is proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy." (Possibly not real, but too good to leave out!)

"Love your enemies, for they tell you your faults."

"I want nothing there for I am happy" - Mooji

or the Dodgeball version:

A: For instance, do you realize you haven't collected any membership fees in 13 months?

B: Hmmm...

A: I'm curious, is it strictly apathy, or do you really not have a goal in life?

B: I found that if you have a goal, that you might not reach it. But if you don't have one, then you are never disappointed. And I gotta tell ya... it feels phenomenal.

That always cracks me up!

An old time favorite is

"A great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude" - Emerson

Hanlon's Razor on 07/27/2011 09:08:53 MDT Print View

I also like Hanlon's Razor, probably composed by Robert A. Heinlein:

"Never attribute to villainy that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."

Or, in the Queen's English, "C**k-up before conspiracy."

Actually, R.A.H. has many interesting nuggets of wisdom:

"Never throw s**t at an armed man." is one that I like. Someone else added a corollary:

"Never stand next to the guy throwing s**t at an armed man."

And isn't there a philosophic mantra that goes: "I am food."

sayings on 07/28/2011 06:34:16 MDT Print View

I love these.

One of my favorite sayings is...

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. ~Native American Proverb

I also like the one below because it rains every time we take a tent out. In fact, we are having our first rain in weeks (80 mm) today and I am packing for a trip. I merely had to remove the tent from the gear closet and the much needed wet arrived.

It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent. ~Dave Barry
