I was talking with my husband Bryan this evening about our favorite sayings that also contain some wisdom. His favorite one is "you can't afford the cheap stuff".

As a traveler, I like St. Augustine's quote: "The world is a book and those who don't travel read only a page".

My old man only ever gave me two pieces of advice:

1. "Always take a handkerchief on a date,"

2. And, well, shoot, the other one is unpublishable.

My favorite, however, is the pessimist's variant of the old saying, "A walk of 1,000 miles begins with a single step":

I also like Hanlon's Razor, probably composed by Robert A. Heinlein:

Actually, R.A.H. has many interesting nuggets of wisdom:

"Never throw s**t at an armed man." is one that I like. Someone else added a corollary:

"Never stand next to the guy throwing s**t at an armed man."

And isn't there a philosophic mantra that goes: "I am food."

I also like the one below because it rains every time we take a tent out. In fact, we are having our first rain in weeks (80 mm) today and I am packing for a trip. I merely had to remove the tent from the gear closet and the much needed wet arrived.
