Rab top bag on 07/18/2011 20:55:45 MDT Print View

I received the top bag weighed in at about 17 ounces I'm 5'11 and 150 and it fits me well. I am planning on cutting the back open to make it a true top quilt similar to the go lite design. Very happy with the 103 purchase.

Mark - FYI -

I cut the back off of mine. i like it that way, otherwise it would be too constrictive for me. Reduced the weight to 15 ounces.

But the top bag (now a quilt) is so narrow that it's hard to stay under. I only use it when I know the nights will be warm or I will be using a bivy to help hold the shape or I bring down pants to stay warm.

I love the weight!

RAB Quantum 800 on 07/19/2011 09:59:49 MDT Print View

I received the RAB Quantum 800. It is indeed longer, it would be a long by US standards.
I'm 5'10 and can fit in the bag entirely, no need for a hood :). Shoulder girth is only 55", quite narrow, even for me at 140 lbs, but I was able to fit with a fleece on; I have regular width shoulders, but I am slim btw. Since it's so narrow in the shoulders I feel the lower half of the bag should be narrower. This bag is best for a tall guy with narrow shoulders and big long legs :).
The pertex on the outside is more solid than whatever they're using on the WM Ultralite or MH Phantom 32. The zipper is 4/5 length and opens both ways.
It has a differential cut, is rated for -18C comfort, and it has enough 850 fill down for me to believe the rating is accurate. The loft is a minimum of 7 inches. The baffles are continuous as far as I can tell. The bag weighs 1410g.
I can't decide if having a longer winter bag is good or bad, but it was definitely a good deal.

Quantum on 07/19/2011 22:06:51 MDT Print View

Well I missed out on the $40 discount but may still pull the trigger. A couple questions for those who bought one already:

1) What's the difference between the Quantum 800 and Quantum Endurance 800?

2) All the review sites list the weight as being close to 1300 grams (3 lb) - where are you getting the 400 gram weight form?

One more question - is this bag rated to 0C or 0F?

post to oz on 07/20/2011 01:28:32 MDT Print View

Would anyone be willing to post a couple of these bags to oz for me? I would be happy to pay for all postage packaging and a bit more. It cost $165 to post the bags here using that site.

Alternatively does anyone know of a company other than hopshopgo.com that posts stuff through to oz?

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Endurance on 07/20/2011 08:59:11 MDT Print View

Andrei, the endurance fabric should be better at keeping outside moisture from getting the down wet.

Bag on 07/20/2011 12:59:08 MDT Print View

Thanks. I didn't realize that quantum top bag and quantum 800 are differnet bags at first.

So can anyone tell me the difference between Quantum Top Bag: http://www.departmentofgoods.com/rab-quantum-top-bag

and Quantum Top Bag AR:
http://www.departmentofgoods.com/rab-quantum-top-bag-ar

AR seems like a steal at $80 and both have the same specs from what I can tell.

It looks like the AR version has a Primaloft footbox (instead of down) and a hood. The non-AR is all down fill and doesn't have a hood.

David,

What temperatures would you feel comfortable, say, without further insulation. How narrow is it?

Cheers.

The AR version may also have a pad sleeve. The top bag being sold probably does not, but others will have to answer if it does or not. If it does not, RAB must have added a couple ounces of down over the earlier versions which is never a bad idea.

AR has a sleeve based on this review:

Answered my own question, no sleeve on the original bag according to review found here

Similar to the question regarding the top bag. I am 5'7"... will it fit me well?
Which one would you recomment between the Rab Quantum Top Bag and Rab Quantum Top Bag AR? Which one is lighter I guess?

Thanks!

Andrei, it was only the first year or so top bag that had the mesh bottom. The 2008 version had a solid pertex quantum bottom but no sleeve. Just to clarify.

John - how is the top bag supposed to be secured to the pad if it doesn't have a sleeve?
