60 liter backpack with a frame? on 06/15/2011 09:03:02 MDT Print View

My Golite Jam 2

After my last hike I noticed that my Golite, wich I always thought that it carried the load a bit strange, is actually too small for me. So it's time to spend the cash for a new one!

What I'm looking for is:
-something around 60 liters or 3660 cu in,
-has a frame to transfer the load to a good hipbelt
-carries comfortably around 15 kg or 33 lbs (for unsupported long hikes = more than a week)
-is preferably tall and narrow.
-has hipbelt pockets
-weighs a maximum of 750 g or 25 oz (preferably a lot less)

The packs that I'm thinking about are:

-The LAUFBURSCHE huckePACK (I live in sweden so I won't get struck by the import tax)
-ULA Circuit or Ohm (the mesh pocket looks kinda small)
-GG Mariposa Plus or G4
-Zpacks Blast (not sure about it's weight carrying capability)

Have I missed one? Thoughts about my choices? Or should I try and make my own pack?

Thanks

There are always the big kahuna options, like Cilogear and McHale... if you don't mind the price tag.

Also, I carried around 30 pounds in a Windrider (2010 model) when I climbed Kilimanjaro, and it carried a lot better than I expected it to, for being a frameless pack. My McHale felt like luxury when I put it back on after that, but since that was a very expensive custom pack, that's to be expected.

I have to chime in here and say that the mesh pocket on the Ohm does look small, but that thing really is a black hole. It seems like there's always room for one more thing in there. Awesome side pockets as well. It's the only pack I've ever owned that has allowed me to reach my water bottle without taking my pack off.

I think you really want to consider the starlite in this mix.

Up until recently I was a ULA guy all the way. My goto summer was an ohm and my winter or I am carrying a bear can was my circuit.

Doug suggested I try a starlite as I wanted to put my bear can in sideways (and I cant on my circuit or ohm).

Its around 24 oz without the stay and I think 28 with it. thats still lighter than my circuit and without the stay its the same as my ohm. It carrys the volume you want, and so far makes packing pretty darn easy as I dont compress anything with all that volume.

In some ways I find it a little too big, but am getting use to it and the weight as I listed above is no penalty.

Just worth a look anyway.

If you want to comfortably carry 33 lbs, IMO the circuit is one of the best. It has a very strong direct stay-to-hip belt connection, a well padded hip belt with large pockets, and top and bottom of belt tighten independently. This holds more secure on the hips under heavy load. The circuit can be pushed to 40+ lbs and still keep the wt off the shoulders.

Circuit is not as big as the 4200 cu in sounds, the internal compartment is only about 3000 with extension collar. Its fairly heavy at 38oz with stay by comparison, but that extra 10oz really gets you about 15 lbs extra carry capacity over lighter weight packs. Its got quite a bit of strap that can be trimmed too for some reason, probably 1+oz worth.
