SpinnTwinn mods? on 06/06/2011 11:10:43 MDT Print View

So I was out this last weekend and love my SpinnTwinn however I encountered some rain that couldn't make up its mind of where it wanted to blow from. Luckily I only received about 20 light drops blown in through the entrance. Has anyone added a small beak to theirs? I did set it up in storm mode and my sleeping bag did manage to stay dry except for the few drops on my face from the swirling wind. Thanks.

were you using a bivy or bug bivy?

neither :) on 06/06/2011 16:49:42 MDT Print View

wasn't using either and was hoping I could avoid that. I was thinking of getting a bug bivy & was thinking the MLD Bug Bivy. Normally weather here (Santa Barbara) isn't rainy but this season we received record amounts of rain.

I carry a piece of lightweight transparent slightly-stiff plastic, and it is most of one square yard in size. I use that as a splash shield, and I move it around to whichever part of the shelter is threatened most by rain or wind. It serves as a carrying container for the shelter, or as a rain scarf for my head.

Bob would you mind posting a picture of what you mean by splash guard? How would you keep it from blowing around?

It's a simple sheet of plastic that weighs one ounce. I put this just inside the shelter on whichever corner the wind and rain is trying to blow in. It is generally draped over my backpack or camera case or anything that should not get wet.

If the rain is falling vertically, then it just hits the shelter and runs off. But, if the rain is blowing horizontally, the splash guard just keeps it from blowing in.
