At Last! on 06/04/2011 20:22:23 MDT Print View

For the past two years, I have worked hard at lowering my pack weight. One of the issues was finding a pack that worked for my back, with tis history of issues. I've gone through a number of light weight packs, and for the last six months had about decided that I would have to stick with a conventional pack that, while heavy (6 lbs), gave me a comfortable carry (ie, didn't set off my back in spasms).

Last week, without much hope but feeling like I should try every option, I ordered a ULA Catalyst. It arrived yesterday evening. Today, I loaded it up with the same load I carried last weekend on an overnight local hike.

Amazing! The Catalyst is less than half the weight of the conventional pack, but is at least as comfortable! The difference in weight is obvious!

I can't tell you how good this feels, to have a great fitting, riding light weight pack! I had decided I just had to lighten all my other gear, and live with the heavy pack for the sake of my back. But the ULA came through for me!

Thank you so much, ULA!

I too have back issues and have found that the Catalyst helps make my backpacking trips more enjoyable.
Glad you found a pack that works for you.
Happy trails.

+1 on the Catalyst. Fantastic pack I've carried for a couple years now. Not UL, but light, functional, well-designed, comfortable, nice looking, durable.

Hey Nick

I was up along Tahquitz Creek the weekend before your grand tour - very mild weather in comparison! The San Jacintos are my favorite local mountains, but I start on the west side, usually Humber Park and Devil's Slide Trail from you.

I expect to spend a good bit of time up here this summer, usually mid-week. I'll keep an eye out for you!

Stephen, if you're out there in about two weeks, keep an eye out for me too. I'll also have a Catalyst. I'll be starting from Devil's Slide or Fuller Ridge.
