Thanks, but that's still tedious for what I had in mind.
I didn't know HTML tables worked, but sure enough it worked fine in my previous post. That's good enough for now, though the simplest thing for me would be the pre tag. If it throws a monkey wrench into the way the code is written to parse tags as I'd assume if tables can't have newlines within them, then I can just write a vim script/macro to convert a tabbed table into a no-new-line HTML table.
