Have a tarp - need help with an inner tent on 05/09/2011 21:56:46 MDT Print View

I bought a 132" x 120" Mamajamba caternary-cut tarp to be used when hammocking. It has pulls so I can keep the tarp away from an inner tent. I can also buy doors which can be attached to close up either or both ends. For backpacking, with another, I'd like to get an inner/net tent to go under it.

QUESTION - What would be the largest dimensions (length, width, height) I could put under the tarp and feel it is safe from rain?

Here is a picture of the dimensions of the tarp:

Hi Wiiawiwb,

I would say that depends largely on what you intend to make the inner out of and how high you are likely to pitch the tarp.

If you are adding a high bathtub floor out of waterproof materials you could potentially make it larger than the tarp, however if it doesn't have one of these probably a couple of inches smaller.

Waterproof fabrics may however cause condensation issues for you in the tarp and will also reduce air flow more than nano see um or something similar.

before knowing how high you want to pitch it and what you want to make it out of it is hard to decide on the exact specifications of the inner.

I hope this helps.

inner net on 05/10/2011 06:06:08 MDT Print View

Wiiawiwb,

Realistically, you could put just about ANY 2-3 person inner net under that tarp-- it really is a BIG mamajamba. 120" is 10', so let you personal preference really dictate your decision. A couple that come to mind are:

Alpinlite Gear

Hyperlite Mountain Gear

MYOG is an option, and so is a custom order from someone like Bear Paw Wilderness Designs

Here are a few choices - any others? on 05/10/2011 07:36:14 MDT Print View

I'd pitch the tarp high enough to enable me to sit in it and feel comfortable. In a rainstorm, I'd be able to retreat to it, sit, and avoid the onslaught of mosquitoes.

That means at least 44" peak height. I'd also prefer to be able to secure the inner tent to the tarp from rings/clips at the top of the inner tent like with the Shangri-La 2.

What 3-person inner tents are there other than the Shangri-La3?

Here's a few I was thinking of:

1) GG Haven - very light
2) SMD The Haven - heavier
3) Shangri-La 2
4) Integral Designs Bug Tent
5) BearPaws - Net 2 customized to a bigger size
