Polycryo shelters? on 05/07/2011 13:28:55 MDT Print View

Thanks to Matt's Polycryo Tube Tent I've been wondering if it's strong enough to use just as a tarp? Everyone says how great they last as being used as ground sheets but I wonder how well they would hold up to wind. Of course I would not be setting it up on a ridge but anywhere where there's a wind break.

So has anyone tried this before? Also what do you think is stronger a Polycryo sheet or AMK blanket material?

I personally don't see the hype over these polycryo shelters that are being made. They dont breath at all, not durable, cant withstand high winds...

Why not just buy 3 yards of silnylon for ~$15 and make a tarp from that. Will last you a long time, much better in wind, and overall way more durable.

If you do want to try your luck with the polycryo tarp, I think there is an article in the MYOG section of BPL talking about different pitches/sizes to use when making a polycryo tarp.
