Whats a good Pyramid tarp for snowcamping ? on 05/04/2011 11:15:57 MDT Print View

In a earlier thread I was advised that a pyramid tarp would perform better in spindrift then a flat tarp and be warmer as well what's a good one that can fit 2 with gear and possibly my frisky husky if the weather got nasty. Thats durable "because the dog and rough terrain" is light and doesnt break the bank I'd like to stay under 150$ if that's possible but could get away with up to 250$ I am open to used and new and all makes and models thank you for any advice

Hi William,

I agree they're a decent winter option. To be brand neutral I'll suggest looking at Black Diamond, Golite, Kifaru, Oware and Ti Goat, for starters (there are others I'm forgetting). I have experience with Golite and Moss (r.i.p.) and will only caution that once you lower the sides to ground/snow level you'll need to concern yourself with ventilation, as moisture can build quickly. The center pole is always there to remind you you can knock down your shelter from the inside with a good thwack.

Sized large enough they're roomy and comfortable, and you can even dig a footwell if you're in snow. Anchored well they handle wind and precipitation. And there's no floor for the dog to rip up.

Worth a look.

Cheers,

Rick

Check out the Oware 10x10 @ 26 oz. it has the highest size to weight ratio I know of and reasonable price (~$225)

The Duomid would be really tight for 2 people and a dog. I have an MLD Supermid, but that is beyond your price range. I would 2nd an Oware pyramid tarp. I'd say minimum 8'x8'.
