Fleece losing "loft" from extended storage? on 04/14/2011 17:08:54 MDT Print View

Hi. Is it possible for fleece to lose "loft" and thus its insulative properties through extended storage?

For example, I have a couple of winter fleece items which are tightly rolled up and placed in a stuff sack. Since I do not need these items for the fair weather seasons (spring-summer-autumn), I am inclined to leave them in the stuff sack until I need them again (next winter).

Of course if the constant compression resulting from being stored in a stuff sack for so long negatively impacts my fleece items (i.e., reduces "loft"), then I may have to resort to some other storage method (good 'ole hanger).

I know its not a good idea to leave a sleeping bag tightly packed in a stuff sack for an extended period of time, and the same could probably said of insulation layer jackets/parkas, but what about fleece?

Thoughts?

Chris, my fleece items have matted over time. Especially my extra fuzzy polartec thermal pro garments. This is the result of sleeping in them (back sleeper), and wearing a pack over them. I don't discern a difference in warmth though but who knows. But i still try to avoid excess compression when I can.
