Lightweight synthetic thermal top on 04/13/2011 21:28:03 MDT Print View

I currently use a long sleeve silk top that is 3.5 oz XL but sometimes I need something a little heavier. I have a mid weight that is 7.7 oz, so something in between. What is the weight of Capailene 1 or is there anything in the 5 oz range.

Many thanks,
Jeff

PS, Is it just me, or does anyone else wish the search function on this site was useful?

Cold gear on 04/13/2011 21:40:40 MDT Print View

Ya agreed the search engine sucks i would recommend cold gear 1.0 or 2.0 they have a grid weave and for the weight are amazingly warm i wouldn't hesitate to start a argument that nothing I have tried has beat them for warmth to weight ratio my 2.0s in small weigh 4.2 bottom and 4.3 tops the 1.0s are lighter I snowboard 40+days a year in some nasty conditions last season I had a day in -25%f -60 with wind chill I just had my 2.0s on under my north face lightly insulated shell "60grams of heetseaker which is similar to primaloft" and was only a little chilly on the lifts and toasty while boarding with just the thermals on as long as there is no wind or they are under something to block the wind they are warm to low 30s with just a slow walking pace overall great thermals light warm durable and they don't hold stink to bad they take about 3days of boarding before they start to smell and I sweat alot boarding just my 2cents hope you find something perfect for you

+1 My standard base layers, depending on the weather, for shoulder seasons and winter. They are light, wick well, and trap enough air to add a little insulative effect.

I have a lot better luck if I limit the search to a particular forum. Hit "Advanced Search," then go to "Forum Search Page," and then select the forum you want to search in, e.g., Gear.

Base layer on 04/14/2011 07:17:41 MDT Print View

If you didn't plan on it already, I'd recommend you keep the silk layer on as your base layer and wear the cap. over the top. Polyester can get quite stinky next to your skin.

In regards to the search. I browse this site 3 ways.

I click on each forum I want to read new posts and open them in a new tab. Read through the first page just to kill time if I do not have anything specific in mind.

If I am looking up a specific item I will go to google and type site:backpackinglight.com YOUR SEARCH TEXT. This is probably what I do 75% of the time. This will only return results from this website.

If I want to search a specific forum, I will click on the advanced search button at the top right of the site, click on Forum Search Page, and type in my search keywords and select a specific forum. For example, type Mountain Laurel Designs and select the Gear Swap forum...

Thanks everyone for your replies and help!

I have been a hold out from purchasing any Under Armour because I felt that they were just a huge marketing ploy riding on the coat tails of the true innovators like Patagonia. But it sounds like it is time to adjust my attitude, swallow my pride, and open my mind. I guess there is no cure for this weight weenie virus.
