Just heard a news report for average price of a gallon of gas:

Missouri = $3.49
NY State = $3.85
California = $4.09

Interesting gasoline refinery numbers:
Missouri = 0 (9 in adjoining states)
New York = 0 (7 in New Jersey)
California = 21

Another interesting fact; Calif crude oil sources:
California 40%
Alaska 20%
Foreign 40%

Also many states have their own requirements for the refining of gas. There is no federal standard. There is only one refinery is the US, that is allowed to export gas into California, which meets California regulations. And to add insult to injury, the state has the highest tax per gallon in the US.

Are there any mountains in Missouri?

$4.35 for 89 octane today in Humboldt. Should be $5 by Labor Day. Ugh...

$3.85 here. I'm 40 miles from a refinery, down the Interstate. I'm also right in the middle of what is probably the largest oil basin in the continental US (excluding Alaska). And we have low state taxes. I can't explain it.

I think I paid $3.89 in SW Washington for 87 octane the other day. I'm expecting $4.50+ this summer. I personally view it as a positive step in pushing people toward cars with better fuel economy and alternative fuels. If you want to complain about gas prices, move to Europe where it's twice the price.

I filled up this weekend but I believe it's around Missouri pricing here. I'm about 30 mins NE of Atlanta. It's about 10 cents higher in Asheville, NC where my house is. The city is surrounded by National Forest on two sides and the Smokies on a third. It's not the Rockies, but it's a pretty prime location in the SE.

zero because I've been driving my '98 Honda Civic for the last two months.

Note: in VA where I live it is 3.53 or so for regular (varies quite a bit). It always amazes me to see cars filling up at stations where it is 10 cent more than another very close by. Must be better chili dogs there.

I believe it was $3.54 on post for 87. When I first got my Prius it only cost me around $20 to fill it up. Now it's up to over $30! Of course, that lasts me almost all week (85 mile round-trip commute per day), even doing 70-75 mph for 3/4 of the commute.

£5.96 a gallon. That's about $9.60! US gasoline is extremely inexpensive!

It just encourages me to walk more is all and use the over priced jogger stroller on steroids I own :-D

Started the day in Chi-town, back home in downstate Illinois tonight. Sure am glad I live 2 miles from my standard workplace. Most days I bike or run to work and back.

1.09/Liter here, and the gasoline plant I can see from my house.

Paid $4.69/gallon last weekend (87 0ctane).

Ben, a US gallon. We actually buy gasoline in litres now, not gallons. It's around 1.49 per litre at my local petrol station (we also don't call it gasoline!). It's less than that in less remote places of the UK.

Gas Prices have unreasonable effect on our emotions for the most part. Think about the example above, the price differential between Missouri and California was 60 cents a gallon. For an average person using 16 gallons of gas a week that is $9.60. In a year that is less than $500.00.

I would guess the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables in Missouri compared to California would more than offset that difference. It becomes a little like driving two miles to save 2cents a gallon on gasoline.

It's funny, I was thinking of asking what you all use as trailhead cars. I've been using a Prius for everything, including road trips and car camping. The mileage is great, but it's been frustrating not to turn down some/most dirt roads. Been thinking of an older xterra as a camping car.

Anyway i'm still running on a 3.95 tank. Got 55 mpg coming down off the mojave and to the coast. Seem to be looking at 4.25 for the next tank.

Juneau, Alaska = $3.95. We have the one of the lowest gasoline taxes in the country, hasn't been increased since the 1970s.

Fort Yukon, Alaska (last week, filling up a snow machine I borrowed) $4.99. That fuel was barged up the Yukon last summer and reflects prices from last August.

John, just go for it! I've taken both my Prius' down some pretty bumpy, pot-hole-filled dirt roads in the last four years!
