I am planning on going to Roan Mountain area for the first time in a couple of weeks (April 8). We will be there for Fri-Sunday. Where should we start and what route should we take to make the most out of this trip? What about water sources? Which map do I need to purchase? Any other advice would be great.

Sorry hadn't checked this thread in a while.

Either park and shuttle from Mountain Harbor B&B/Hostel (at US19E) which is the closest to Roan Highlands or if you want a few more miles contact Bob Peoples at Kincora Hostel on Dennis Cove Road. Have them shuttle you out and hike back to the hostel and your car.

Water should be flowing fine at all of the shelters.

I recommend the ATC Map (comes in the TN/NC map pack)

What kinda of mileage are you looking at each day?
