What do you all think would be the strongest clear/lightweight tape for permanently bonding plastic shopping bags?

Have you considered packaging tape? I can't comment on the weight, but it's readily available and relatively strong as long there isn't a preexisting tear to start a "run."

Most of the plastic shopping bags that I see are not transparent. Most here are translucent, so the tape would not need to be clear. I've been playing some of the same games with plastic produce bags, and they are translucent also.

Apparently you can bond them with an iron!
