Just now I see the top 4 threads on GEAR are:
PLB use
best Android GPS app.
best Steripen
and my own "GPS state-of-the-art"question

When backpacking I routinely carry a Steripen, GPS and digital camera.(No I-Pod Nano:)
Hmmmm... Are "we" becoming to gadget-dependent?

Now if that darn Android could just have a water sterilization app for UV rays from the screen and a PLB app. it would narrow it down to just one gadget. I mean, you can already load songs into it...

I view them as tools... not much different philosophically than backpacks, hiking poles, etc. If the tool adds more to your hiking safety, comfort, enjoyment than its cost in weight, etc. -- then hey, why not? Like everything else in life, it's a matter of balance. 'Choice' is a wonderful thing.

i carry a small ham radio with me - it's a wide band receiver and i can enjoy A Prairie Home Companion while i eat dinner and enjoy a cigar. if i need to summon help, i can usually find a repeater.
