Interesting development about proposed quiet areas.

Last day for comments of 11 Feb 2011

The Forest Service has rescheduled two informational meetings in Southfield and Lansing that were canceled this past week due to severe weather.

Forest Service representatives will meet with the public to discuss a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement to address deficiencies in the Huron-Manistee National Forests’ Land and Resource Management Plan, as directed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Public meetings to explain the SEIS process and accept written comments will be held:

* 2/09/11—Hilton Garden Inn, 26000 American Drive, Southfield, MI, from 4–8 p.m.;
* 2/10/11—Causeway Bay Hotel, 6820 South Cedar, Lansing, MI, from 4–8 p.m.;

As a result of a ruling by the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the Forest Service will prepare a SEIS to evaluate the environmental impacts of a proposed ban on firearm hunting and snowmobile use, subject to existing rights, in Semiprimitive Non-motorized Management Areas and a ban on firearm hunting, subject to existing rights, in the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area. Public comment will enable the agency to make a decision in accordance with federal regulations.

Public comments must be received by Feb. 11, 2011. Written comments may be submitted to the Forest Planner, Huron-Manistee National Forests, 1755 S. Mitchell Street, Cadillac, MI 49601 or faxed to (231) 775-5551. Comments may be submitted electronically to: comments-eastern-huron-manistee@fs.fed.us, and should contain the subject line “Forest Plan SEIS.” For more information, contact Kenneth Arbogast, public affairs officer for the Huron-Manistee National Forests, at (231) 775-5023, Ext. 8726 or visit the forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/hmnf.
