I can't take credit for this find. Another member posted this link a while back and I finally got around to using it. I am so impressed with it, that I thought I'd post it again.

Anyhow, here's my gearlist if anyone cares to comment or has any suggestions. It takes a couple of steps, but it's just cut and paste, and you can use my gearlist as an example to figure it out (not that it's hard).

Just go to the link below, press the load button, and copy and paste the "text" below into the load box. You can move items from the "Shelf" side, gear that I own, to the "Pack" side, being gear that I carry, or should carry. You can also move whole "containers". For example move "clothes worn" section out to get you baseweight, skin out etc.

The example below is what I just used on my recent trip to Patagonia. Didn't have the Kookabay pad yet, and didn't use the Tigoat poles because of air travel.

I'm a Mac user. Don't use any commas, or brackets in your item description or it won't load properly, slashes seem to be OK.

I'm amused that someone found my site and posted it :) . I posted it on nwhikers.net last month.

Anyways, this was just something I threw together in a few long evenings as a project to teach myself more javascript stuff. I could potentially improve it if people wanted. I didn't bother with storing lists in a database and such but I could certainly do something along those lines.

Oh, and you can critique my gear by clicking on "Load Example"... not that light currently.

Ah.. actually I think it was Dale Wambaugh from the PNW who first posted the link. He probably frequents the NWhiker site.

Really, I don't think you really need to change anything. It's excellent how simple and functional the way it is now. I really like the fact you can just easily add and subtract quantities, drag and drop etc (I'm not familiar with excel). And that you can instantly convert it to metric.

This is awesome! This is going to replace my google doc excel spreadsheet. I was kind of thinking about making something like this myself.

The only major complaint that I have is that if I accidentally press the enter button, it clears the page (but when I got back in Chrome, the data re-appears).

Here are a few things that would improve the tool:

- It would be nice to use the "hand cursor" when hovering over an item that can be dragged and dropped.

- Maybe have a print option?

- Have a save option that brings up a file dialog to save the text file on your computer. Then you could add a load from file option to select a file from your computer.

- If you were going to make a server side tool like this, you could do quite a bit. Such as have a shelf where that user can add all of their gear. They can then construct different "packs" with gear from their shelf. So you could have a winter and a summer pack. Or a Wet Summer Pack, Dry Summer Pack, Day Pack, etc...

- Going with the above, you could have a "new gear" interface that helps you determine which new gear to buy. You could enter a new item that has a weight, and price. The system could then compare that item against the item or items you already have on your shelf (comparing weight and size). This could help people decide which gear is worth buying.

This is a really solid tool. I really like how you've used JQuery.

I have yet to post my gear list. This will make it much easier. You guys have done a good deed for those of us who can't seem to find the time in our schedules to do this kind of stuff.

I have no idea how I figured this out, it really didn't take long, but if you for whatever reason want to post your gearlist from Sean's site on BPL (like I did above), you have to replace the following lines when posting:

<Containers>

</Containers>
<Items>

</Items>

use: &,l,t,;containers&,g,t,;

Take out the commas, you get the idea .. seems that forward and back arrows don't show up on posts. That way, when someone cuts and pastes your post into Sean's geartool, it'll work.

I guess if Sean had a way of exporting an image of his page to use on posts, that would be an improvement.
