Cheers,
Stephen

Durability of Nunatak Epic fabric on 02/06/2011 11:41:54 MST Print View

Stephen,

As the Nunatak site says re Epic - 'The best choice for jackets and bags requiring the maximum water and abrasion resistance'.

I went for the .8 quantum to save weight for my skaha plus (with pocket) as I mainly only use it for camp wear/part of my sleeping system when backpacking, so my priorities are low weight and breathability.

I always carry windproof and/or rain shell so I have them sized to go over the skaha for extra protection if necessary.

If I ordered again I would get the same. The only difference I might make, depending on the temps I wanted it to cover, might be to add a little extra length as it's quite a short pull-on, only a tiny bit longer than a PHD Yukon for example.

Yes much more durable on 02/06/2011 11:52:51 MST Print View

I had a Arc Alpinist in the pertex fabric, and I now own an Arc Specialist in Epic, just by the feel of the fabric, it seems as if it may be twice the thickness of the pertex, or at least 1-1/2 times the thickness. One big difference I see, is that the Epic fabric, doesn't let the down loft as high or thick. The Epic is easily more durable IMHO anyway.

EPIC used by Nunatak on 02/06/2011 18:59:59 MST Print View

On my Nunatak quilts I have two lightweight fabrics - 1.0 oz Quantum and 0.9 oz spinnaker. No real complaints but neither is especially downproof. My Nunatak Chugach Booties are EPIC and waterproof, very durable, no down escaping. Whatever flavor EPIC Nunatak uses is quite stout.

Stephen,
Looking for durability, I would choose nylon over polyester, even though the
additional weight of the polyester in the Epic treated fabric probably adds strength; because strength is relative, in the sense that any of these lighter fabrics must be treated carefully to avoid rips etc.
