Just received a 2011 Cap 1 (stretch!) t-shirt and Cap 2 LS crew as a b-day present from my in-laws (thanks Jackie!). Good timing as some of my old ones are developing perma-stink.

I'm very pleased to report that the new sizing is the best yet. Medium used to fit me (38" chest, 5'11", 160lbs) very well. A few years ago it got baggy. My last few outlet purchases have been smalls, which have slightly short sleeves but fit in the torso like the old mediums.

The brand new ones, mediums, fit snug in the chest, and have very long arms, and a nice long torso.

Thanks for getting back to your roots Patagonia!

Chasing the elusive fit of Patagonia clothing from year to year sure is fun! I love their stuff but over the years it seems like when they come out with an item I really want, at a light weight, the fit is usually wrong. Then the next update will correct the fit but then feature creep has set in and the weight goes up!

I was down at the Ventura HQ recently trying on some things and I noticed they are getting the fit dialed in on most of the items. They could still slim down the fit in the torso a little on a lot of things. Their is no way I should be fitting in a medium when I am 6'3" and 205!

2011 Capilene eschewed in some odd colorways in my opinion...

2012 and the pending Capilene 'Tron' line...

As far as the fit, snug everywhere.

I would totally buy that for the money even if it was a size too small!

Sizing shouldn't be an issue whatsoever, Patagonia is moving to a unisex/"one size fits all" cut adept at clinging to all the areas that matter. Durability you ask? 5 microcycles have been reported in wear testing. Promising stuff.

sizing on 02/04/2011 08:30:47 MST Print View

I've still got some capilene pieces from the 80's (and 90's and 00's :))-sizing has been all over the board unfortunately (true w/ almost all of their line!)- I've never vacillated between more than 2 sizes (L and XL), but I've got L's that are on the big side and XL's that are tight

the last stuff I've gotten ~ 08-10 has been relatively true to size (Large) for me

Eugene- I'm in for a set :)

I just picked up a new Capilene 3 pullover and the arms are short and I had to size down to a large. Fabric seems a bit thinner, a bit dissapointed.

My Capilene 3 pullover from 2 years ago is a perfect fit and is a XL.

Variability between items on 02/04/2011 12:24:22 MST Print View

I tried on a number of different Capilene styles and weights recently at REI, all in size small. Some fit me, some were too big. It's disconcerting not only that sizing varies from year to year, but also that sizing is not consistent between different items.

outlets get seconds? on 02/04/2011 12:38:37 MST Print View

Are the sizes varying because we don't pay $50 a shirt? Or are you guys going and buying the new cap right off the shelf and finding this variation? I always assumed that cap bought online for half the price of my outfitter are kind of like clothing at Kohls, seconds that you can't even really tell don't fit right unless you hold it up to the jeans/shirt you bought at the mall.

I stopped buying cap all together when I found out how cheap duofold and chillipeppers are. Gander mountain sells a sweet dual layer (100% synthetic coupled with 30% wool blend) for $15 regular price! These all fit great and consistently, true to size. Oh well its not like people buy cap w/out trying it on.... lol?

fickle on 02/04/2011 12:57:07 MST Print View

Patagonia sizing has always been on the fickle size and somehow I don't suspect that's going to change

I don't have the luxury of trying them on first (small town) and you don't see seconds on sale very often- if you do they are usually some visual blemish- not a sizing issue

Just got a new Cap 3 crew delivered today. It's definitely thinner than the older cap 3 and is less form fitting. Sending it back for a refund.

And that's why I like Arc'teryx... on 02/13/2011 19:05:40 MST Print View

And that's why I like Arc'teryx... As far as I've known, a Medium is a Medium and an Arc'teryx Medium fits me perfectly. I appreciate that I don't have to deal with Arc'teryx neurotically retooling their sizes every season, etc.. So, the beauty is that I don't really need to try on an Arc'teryx item to "see if it fits". This makes mail ordering a less stressful experience.

I wish other clothing manufacturers--including mainstream ones--had their sh*t together like this. I've gone from a "Large" to a "Medium" to (now) a "Small" in Banana Republic clothes, as they've recalibrated everything not to hurt the sensibilities of fat people having to buy double extra large, etc.
