Is there any danger (as in illness) from boiling water in an aluminum pot such as a Imusa mug? I'm only boiling water, not cooking any food in it, but putting the boiled water into the food. I'm using a MYOG Cat stove.

None that anyone can point to and say "yes, there is a danger" after over 40 years of testing them. Are they safe? Well, as safe as any. Except for highly acidic foods, sure. They are fine.

Generally aluminum forms an oxide over the metal. This is not very soluable. Most would say it is insoluable, but water will disolve most anything, even rocks and stones, so some degree.

It's possible aluminum contributes to Alzheimer's disease or Autism.

Maybe, you shouldn't use aluminum cookware at home, especially with acidic foods and if you scrape on it with a spatula.

Some people would consider that kooky.

If your backpacking a few nights a year and just boiling water it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't see it being an issue personally except for I hate the smell of plain aluminum. It gets on your hands to say the least - part of why I love hard anodized aluminum. :-)

YMMV of course!

I recall a scare concerning aluminum pots and Alzheimers a long time ago. I believe it was debunked. To my knowledge there is no known carcinogenic effects from aluminum. See the Snopes article: http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/valentino.asp.
