Carry-on Size UL Pack on 02/02/2011 23:31:13 MST Print View

I'm looking for a dual-use pack for travel and carry-on for airplanes but also usable for a 1-2 night backpacking trip. Carry-on size tends to relegate me to packs in the 30-40L size.

I'm currently considering these packs:
MLD Burn
REI Flash 30
GoLite Peak

Are there any other packs I should consider? Any thoughts of which of these would be best suited for this dual-use task? I think my emphasis is more on travel as I will soon have a ULA Ohm in my possession.

The HMG Windrider might work -- I'm not 100% sure about it's carry-on sizing, but it's around the same size as my Think Tank rolling bag, which does fit in the overhead compartments, so I think it will go. I'm planning on using mine on Kilimanjaro, so I'll find out soon! I'm very much hoping that it will fit in an overhead compartment, because I'm going to be carrying my film and camera gear in it.

A lot of frameless would work. if you would like a light frame, six moon designs and gossamer gear gorilla would work. Remember that sharps, fuel, and hiking poles can't be brought as carry on.

GoLite Peak is perfect. The hooks on the bottom and the compression straps can shrink it down. The black version should blend in well.

Along w/ the HMG windrider you could also consider the MLD prophet (exodus as long as you don't have it maxed out) GG Murmur or a Zpacks 20 or 26. Actually after typing that and thinking about it, you can pretty much use whatever size frameless pack that fits your needs.
