Angeles Crest: March on 02/10/2011 22:19:45 MST Print View

So the last week in March would be a good time since James leaves Socal after that and Craig is on spring break. If that doesnt work out James then we'll still keep you posted in case you want to make it back down here. I think this would be a pretty good hike, I'm looking forward to it.

Hey Adan...
Just sent you a PM. I'll be spending the night with a friend on the East Fork tomorrow (Friday) night. Mellow trip, just going to hike in short (probably no more than 5-6 miles), drink some beer, eat good food, and sleep outside. You're more than welcome to join us. We should be getting up there at around 3pm and we'll be back at the car by ~9 on Saturday morning.
It would be cool to meet....My cell number is in the PM.

On the Angeles Crest hike, I think I could do the last week of March if it were 2 nights/3 days. Lets talk about it if that's a good time for everyone else.

Brandon, so we lured you in! Good. We've got quite a rag-tag bunch going rite now. cant get organized for sh... but when the pieces all come together its gonna be good. You been on any parts of these trail I'm talking about? I'm surprised folks havent offered any info about the route but maybe that's because we're the first to attempt it. ;)

Chad,
I'd love to have you along but we gotta keep the group small too since most folks dont prefer large group hikes, myself included. So would you mind being on reserve in case somebody cant make it? Many times one or two people have something come up last minute.

Adan

Thanks Chad, we'll definitely call on you if the opportunity arises.

I've been asking around and thanks to Hikin Jim, I have a ton more info about the proposed route. I think its safe to say that we can start way over at Three Points on the PCT. This will give us a good long day or day and a half from Cloudburst east to Little Jimmy Camp with plenty of water along the way. Burn damage should be minimal on the entire route.

Now here's where we have a decision to make, stay on the PCT and make this a straight forward hike out to Lytle taking the grand tour of Blue Ridge and Lytle Creek Drainage --or--- Drop down into Vincent Gulch and go for an adventurous cross-country bushwack to Baldy or to East Fork San Gabriel River. Baldy would require alot of off-trail routefinding and a summit of 9500 Dawson Peak only to drop 1,000 feet and then climb back up to Baldy at 10,000ft. East Fork is still alot of cross-country, but little elevation gain in comparison to Baldy.

Either would probably make this a 3 or 4 day hike. Any preferences or suggestions? I have been wanting to see all of these options so I can go either way. Original idea was out to Baldy but I wasnt sure everyone was in the mood for a mini-epic or what.

Lots of interesting options. This guy really knows the place well and has been extremely helpful, thanks Hikin Jim!

My opinion... on 02/16/2011 13:32:07 MST Print View

Well all of those sound awesome, and I'm definitely down for any of those trips.

I've seen a lot of the san gabriel and I've seen a lot of baldy, but I haven't seen hardly any of the lytle area, so i suppose that would probably be my ideal trip since it's newest to me.

However, I do like hiking along water, so thats really my preference here, the trail with the most water along the way :) haha.

What am I saying, I really am up for any of these xD

Thanks James. After giving this some more thought, shuttling will be a challenge so I'm leaning towards coming out over Baldy but cutting out most of the bushwacking by staying on the PCT until we hit the backbone trail (confirming this route).

Day 1 (5pm)Park cars near Baldy, Shuttle to Three Points and camp
Day 2 Three Points to Little Jimmy 17.5 miles
Day 3 Little Jimmy to Blue Ridge 16.5 miles
Day 4 Blue Ridge to Manker Flats 13.5 miles

two groups? on 02/22/2011 09:59:58 MST Print View

Well if no one else minds, I'll add my name to the "extra" list. If they're aren't enough people that drop out, it looks like there might even be a big enough group for two separate ones. I'll keep on eye on the thread and see what everyone else thinks.

Joseph, my notifications are not working well anymore so I didnt see this post from you. You're on the list. We were considering late March but after the latest dump of snow we're unsure BP and Baldy will be passable by then unless we carry spikes and axes. I want to go as soon as it's safe without that stuff.

Plans have changed... in a good way! on 04/01/2011 00:38:22 MDT Print View

So due to a horrible tax season, I have postponed my move to the bay area until June.

Therefor, I'm totally down (and psyched!) for this hike.. so I hope this happens still :)

Every day of rain I think "ugh, thats just more snow thats going to have to melt".

Now it's getting pretty hot though, so hopefully soon? :)

Memorial weekend on 04/27/2011 10:53:59 MDT Print View

I think that would be a good time. I'm going to check and see if I'm clear for that weekend. I'd love to hear from the rest of the crew, how's memorial sound everyone? It'll be harder for me after May because I have big trips in July and August already. So May-June is best.

I already have a Memorial Day trip planned. But something in June would work, if you give me the weekend after Memorial Day with my wife :)
