ll bean nanopuff imitation on 01/18/2011 14:51:10 MST Print View

just as a heads up for people who may be interested ... llbean now makes a nanopuff imitation ... i talked to them and it weights 12 oz for a med vs the 10+ oz for the nanopuff, but has 2 hand pockets for the extra weigh ... its 60 g/m of primaloft one ..

the list price is 99$ vs 149$ for the patagucci ... now you can get the nano for around $100 on sale, but you can also find ll bean coupons, ive seen up to 30% off at times

also it comes in tall sizes for men, and petite for women ...

no fancy yuppie name brand though ;)

just another option ... (ll bean dont pay me honestly)

I've been using (and liking) the REI Spruce Run jacket. A little heavier, but it also zips off to be a vest. I got mine on clearance / end of season a few years ago for $50. Not the $150 they want now.

Original version (the one I have)

Yuppie Gear? on 01/19/2011 08:55:46 MST Print View

"Hmmmm. What does this piece of gear really SAY about me?"

Pffft.

Listen, Im poor white trash. I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left. If I got a great deal on some quality gear, the last thing I would worry about is, "Does this make me look like a rich douche?"

dale,

if youre talking about this one http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/66223?from=SR&feat=sr

its not the same ... this one is heavier with 133g/m PL1 insulation .. still a good deal for a heavier synth jacket...i believe its like 750g or so ....

"Does this make me look like a rich douche?"

That's asking a lot from a jacket ;)

It was the jacket asking the question.......

nanopuff on 01/19/2011 20:05:49 MST Print View

has anyone really used the nanopuff as a active midlayer? I was just wondering how sweaty it is? Seems like its only a little lighter then a R2 but could be sweatier?

rob ...

i use my atom as a mid layer when active but it has to be pretty darn cold ... its more suitable as a light belay jacket, for stop and go activities like climbing (over or under a windshirt), or a moderate pace

my preference is for a open weave fleece for highly active situations... its not much heavier than my atom ... maybe like 3-4 oz more ... but much more breathable and dries quicker

the nano is likely less breathable and warmer than my atom ...

Similarly, has anyone in a moderate climate (such as the SE US) used this as a winter camp insulator? The weight impresses me, but it does not seem like it would provide adequate warmth even under a shell if I were not moving.

Eric,

Thanks, I guess I will stick to the heavier gear for winter. 40's would be great here in early fall/late spring but I am primarily concerned with temps near or sub freezing, which my down sweater has been good for so far. Now I just have to hope they haven't discontinued the micro.

thanks Eric but I was really thinking of it as a mid-layer for climbing/backpacking/ski touring in the Canadian winter.
Seems like it is getting alot of use as a climbing layer - I was kinda wondering what people thought of it as an active midlayer during *real* winter weather. :P
Looks great with a R1 for cap use in summer though.

i had a nano puff and it was clammy and felt more sweaty than my atom MX. for more warmth i have an Atom sv now than can be used for belays and sitting around. if you need my winter credentials its -10c and its currently a heat wave, last week was below -25c without wind and I had a 200 weight wool, R1 and a Sierra flex down on and was overly warm.

thanks Robert - sounds like the Atoms might be best, or the EB Serrano. Seems strange using synth as a mid-layer vs R2 though. I'm wondering if it is just marketing or if there is some preformace gain?
I tend to use softshells, or if it is wet PackLite as my shell
