lightweight pack on 01/17/2011 09:23:06 MST Print View

For that volume I use a ULA-ohm -- you cant have mine :) new these are $175. I picked my up used for ~$125. It has a light frame and comes in at ~1.5lbs.

The jam listed above is supposed to be a really nice pack -- though it is frameless. The price John has it listed at is really nice too...

I have a larger golite pack that is ~70L -- the golite Quest its is about 70 liters and 3lbs. It has a fairly substancial frame -- probably pretty comfy for 40lbs, depending on how well it fits.
Here are a couple of reviews from this site:

I have being debating gettting rid of this pack, as it doesn't really get used that much. I would let it go for what I paid for it $80 -- since you live in K-town I wouldn't have to ship it to you and you could try it on...
this is the newest version

Yeah, I have been keeping an eye on the ULA OHM. Do you have any complaints on this pack?

ohm complaints on 01/17/2011 12:34:20 MST Print View

I have no real complaints about this pack. I have only used it on one daytrip (loaded with ~25lbs for testing). It carried pretty well at that weight. The real test will be when I put ~35lb in it. At some point I hope to modify the hipbelt (make it bigger) -- the new version already has a larger hipbelt.

So, so far so good, but really untested (by me anyways).

A couple of other packs to consider:
SMD Swift w/ wingbelt and aluminum stay -- ~23oz, $160 -- I strongly considered this one. Someone mentioned Blue Ridge Mountain Sports in Farragut had one but I haven't been by to check -- this may be last years model without stay.

The osprey exos 58 may be worth a look also, 2.5lb. You see these for sale on here pretty reguarly for ~$125

If you need a frame you could probably find a way to add one to the Jam listed above and still come in well under $150 and be at ~2lbs

If it fits you an ohm just popped up for sale here...see a post by Benjamin. You better hurry, it probably won't last long.

The Blue Ridge Mtn Sports in Farragut (Knoxville) does have the SMD Starlite and it does have the aluminum stays.

I did see that pack at BludeRidge, It is just so exspensive new, I am going to wait for one to show up here.

Do you guys know of any backpacking clubs in the smokies area? I am new to here and trying to get into the sport, but its hard when you don't know anyone.

Lot of choices under $150 on 01/27/2011 22:40:25 MST Print View

Detour Gearzone has Golite Jams FS for $81! An interesting pack is the Osprey Hornet 46. I believe the Ospreys only count the main bag in quoting CIs/Liters, so in say large that is probably around 800 or so CIs bigger than stated. In large 1.5 pounds. I have a ULA Circuit just over 2 lbs that you can find used probably at or under $150.I am 6 foot, 190-95 pounds, 20.5 inch torso, for me the Circuit is a very comfortable pack. Check the swap section for ULA Ohms, Circuits,Conduits or whatever now called, Golite Jams, the list goes on awhile. The Osprey packs like the Talon 44, and Exos 46/58 are huge.. Prolitegear I think has some Osprey Talon 44s for $118..LOt of choices, good luck!
