SMD Starlite on 12/29/2010 15:44:54 MST Print View

I am in the process of looking for a new pack and I was wondering if anybody could comment about the SMD Starlite. I am specifically interested in any problems anybody has had with the length of the optional hoop stay. I have a pretty short torso and seeing as the stay is offered as one length, I am a little concerned that when using the stay, the length will be uncomfortable for my torso. I have read all the threads about this pack and nobody has mentioned this as a problem so maybe my concerns are unfounded. Thanks and I appreciate all input.

I have the version before the hoop stay. The hoop is nice.
Either way, they are just an aluminum strip that can be bent and trimmed to fit your size.
You may find that you don't need it if you use a closed cell foam pad or have a packing system that adds support.

I have always thought the stays were too short for my long torso and the load lifters didn't work as well as they could. So for you it might be just right and the new Starlight is more adjustable in the harness than my 2005 is too.

Thank you both for responding about your experiences. My weight is low enough to wear I doubt I will need the stays much but the necessity to carry large amounts of food and water on occasion may force me to. I have read all about this pack on here and nobody mentioned the stay length as being a problem so I just wanted to make sure. I'm probably gonna pull the trigger. Thanks!
