Brrrr! on 12/13/2010 11:50:33 MST Print View

We already had some sub-zero F temps this winter, but living 10 blocks away from Lake Superior had insulated us from the worst of it. No so this weekend! -10 F today on my way to work. Midday and it's only warmed up to 4 F.

As much as I like hiking and snowshoeing... I'm sure glad I don't have to go outside and sleep in this! :D

No disagreement there!

I've been testing the advice of some folks in the winter laying threads lately, and have started off wearing a lot less than I usually would this time of year for day hikes. Fun to test the base layer plus hard shell method with windchills of -30 F! At least, it's fun as long as I continue to jog in place once I get back to the car. :)

Low temp -8F, high temp +6F, bright sun and no wind ... yahOO, January come early this year!.

Thin X-Static base (top and bottom), REI Sahara pants, old and well worn 100wt fleece jacket, mid weight watch cap. suitable hand and foot wear and a hooded unlined nylon shell ... too much clothing for shoveling snow even at a leisurely pace.

Brings back fond memories of my childhood in Northern Michigan. We loved it as kids, but I sure wouldn't want to spend my winters in it now.

Picked these from the garden two days ago...if that's any indication of our weather here.

And still have plenty more to come...
