WTB Wool Socks on 12/03/2010 20:07:15 MST Print View

Hey guys,

So I am in the outdoor education staff training program here at Colgate University. I am not a fan of wearing socks but they are asking that I buy some wool ones for our winter trip. I was wondering if anyone has some wool socks (smartwool, etc?) that I could buy? I thought I would try here before buying new ones. Thank you all

Evan, I have a couple pairs I can send you. They're all thick wool socks that fit well when my feet were 9.5. Let me know. I'll be out hiking for the next two weeks, but I'll send them out when I get back if that'll work for you.

Evan:

I have 2 pairs of men's size large Smartwool Adrenaline crew length hiking socks. I don't use them anymore. I'll sell them for $15.00 including shipping -- if you'd like them, PM me...

If you have or know someone with a Costco membership, they have a 4pk/10.00 Outdoor Trail Socks, merino wool blend. They are very similar to REI hiking socks. For your winter trip, they should work fine.

The price on these socks is a great buy, and they feel good. But. . . don't expect to get a lot of wear out of them. I've bought two sets, and they wore out so fast I won't do it again, despite the great price.

They wear out in the heal (gets real thin real fast) and in the ball of the foot area (real thin real fast).

I was so surprised, because normally I have high regard for Costco products. So I thought that I should probably tell them about the problems, because it's hard for me to believe that they would keep selling them if they knew. But I haven't yet.

So, buyer beware for now. On the other hand, for this buyer, they would quickly feel like his usual "no socks" method, which might be fine.

Anyone else have experience with Costco wool socks they want to share (on 'Gear' so we don't hijack this thread)?
