24 Series Gear List on 12/02/2010 20:04:57 MST Print View

1. Ryan Jordan is working on editing his next episode of "24," a video series about treks that take less than 24 hours.
2. With it, he will publish his version of a 24-hour gear list.
3. When it's published, we'll also publish the winners of this contest.

We're soliciting YOUR gear list for a 24-hour trip, too.

Here's the context: this list gets printed out and you use this piece of paper and a pen (and perhaps, a scale) - not your computer - to pack for a trip.

Here are the guidelines:

1. It must be submitted to submissions@backpackinglight.com as a PDF file.
2. You are limited to ONE page that is 8.5" wide and 11.0" tall.
3. No use of brand names or models are allowed. In other words, "sleeping bag or quilt" or "torso sized sleeping pad" are OK but "Western Mountaineering Ultralight" and "Backpacking Light TorsoLite" are NOT!
4. Your gear list should be as SIMPLE as possible and contain as few items as possible without sacrificing a great deal of comfort or safety.
5. Your gear list must include a cook kit and be geared towards 3-season use in temperate climates, where you might expect cold rain or a snow shower, and a little mountain wind.
6. Your gear list should include blank spots to write in gear weights, and summary weights (you be the judge about what weights to include).
7. Your PDF must be in black and white - no color or gray scales.

Lists will be evaluated based on the following merits:

1. Simplicity and applicability for a 24-hour trip.
2. Generic-ness and ability to appeal to a wide audience without modification.
3. Aesthetic design and layout of the 1-page PDF.
4. Adherence to the criteria above.

Winners will receive:

1st Prize: $100 Gift Certificate to backpackinglight.com
2nd Prize: $50 Gift Certificate to backpackinglight.com
3rd Prize: $25 Gift Certificate to backpackinglight.com

All entries will be published at backpackinglight.com.

Deadline for submission: January 31, 2011

24 hour Gear list on 12/22/2010 22:45:26 MST Print View

Wouldn't the 24 hour list be pretty much the same as an extended gear list...except for less food?

Not really - you can get by with a lot less stuff on a 24-hour trip than you need on an extended trip.

Also, in response to another question already answered via PM, the gear lists should be portrait orientation, rather than landscape. We have, um, plans for the winner. Big plans.

WORLD DOMINATING PLANS!

Ok, they are merely "awesome" rather than "dominating." But still pretty cool.

Social Bump. I missed this the first time around.

Stove on 12/23/2010 13:16:34 MST Print View

Them's the rules. Even on a 24-hour trip, you may need to boil water and must be prepared to do so. Also, coffee is just so much better hot!

Cook Kit on 12/23/2010 13:18:45 MST Print View

>> 5. Your gear list must include a cook kit

I'm thinking that a cook kit doesn't have to include a stove. Some of my best back-country cooking has been with sticks or a grill.

I can live with that!

Looks like a fun exercise.

A couple of questions as took a crack at this.

* Do units matter (english, metric, my choice)?
* Does the title matter (Should it reference BPL, be my name, generic, none, does not matter)?
* I assume it should include worn/carried items, correct or my choice

Thanks, Jamie

Hi Jamie!
Sorry for the delay - been a holiday weekend of sorts!

The answer to all those questions: it's up to you. We're not looking for something super-specific enough to detail that stuff out. So... do whatever makes your heart beat faster!

24 Hour Gear List on 01/11/2011 09:39:00 MST Print View

Not linking in the newsletter this week, so this is a purely "get attention" bump.

We have fewer than a dozen entries so far, so the odds are good. Here's hoping the goods aren't odd. ;)

Warmly,
Addie

24 Hour Gear List on 01/18/2011 11:14:51 MST Print View

Should we restrict the list to equipment we own or have used, or can we make a list that includes items that we would LIKE to own, but haven't acquired as yet?

Whatever you like. We've kept the rules open-ended for a reason.

Come on Ryan, post the Video. I'm stuck at home in a blizzard in Missouri ?!? Been spending last hours shoveling and reading trip reports. :)

Not yet. I've just zipped them all up and sent them over to Ryan for review. I will check in with him regularly to make sure it's high on his priority list!

Also, to all who submitted: THANK YOU! It's obvious that time and care went into these, and I'm excited for the next steps. Hope you are too, even though you don't know them yet. :)

Hey all!
We're rounding up two other folks to help rank the entries. I'm shooting for the end of March, but I'm not on the ranking team.
Thanks!
