Commandments of UL Hiking on 09/01/2006 09:12:19 MDT Print View

Please add/refine this with me:

Thou shalt tread lightly upon the Earth and leave no trace of thy presence.

Thou shalt pack only what thee will use.

Thou shalt lighten thy pack and thy shelter and thy bedding.

Thou shalt lighten thy stove and thy pot and thy garments too.

Thou shalt remove anything that is a burden to thee: if thy zipper or strap or buckle offends thee, cut if off for the sake of thy back and thy knees.

Thou shalt use thy staff to support thy roof, and thy cloak for thy roof, for those who get the most from their possessions shall be blessed with lightness.

Thou shalt use lamps of LED's, for thy battery's sake.

Thou shalt find thy shoes in the homes of runners of mountain trails.

Thou shalt wear thy garments in layers.

Thou shalt always possess the Ten Essentials for thy safety's sake.

Thou shalt not gloat upon the unwashed, fallen, and uninformed instead spreading this gospel with passion balanced with equanimity.

Every item thou shalt carry shall serve more than one purpose.

Thou shalt not carry the spork for it is an abomination before my eyes, for lo, it can neither twirl pasta, yea, even ramen, nor can it lift soup. And thou shalt use the righteous spoon alone.

Thou shalt procure for thine house a scale of exceeding fineness; And upon the scale shalt thou weigh all things even unto the gram; And upon each thing thou weighest as I command shalt thou inscribe the true weight as revealed by the scale which thou shalt procure.

Thou shalt seek the wisdom of the wilderness and the skill to do all things needful that thou may sojourn in the wilderness for the time alloted and return.

Thou shall not be a commandment-driven fanatic and just do it because it is the fun thing to do ;)

I entered a mtn. bike race a couple of weeks ago, I've trained hard, have a real nice bike, lotsa goodies, as light as I can get it without having it fall apart, way too much money in it... there's this kid riding his dad's unsuspended 80's bike, too big, too heavy, and a grin you couldn't wash off with a firehose. I wasn't having any fun at all until he passed me, just suffering to the finish line. It was about this time I discovered Abdon's Rule.
