I've posted my audiobook lists before but this year, it's limited to outdoor related audiobooks. I'll post later my 4/5 star rated/read audiobooks updated for this year.

My top two passions are hiking and audiobooks. I love my Apple Ipod Nano for audiobooks as it is the easiest to back up a paragraph or sentence in an audiobook compared to all other devices. I'm not impressed with the newest Nano, I prefer the prior generation Nano myself. Anyway, for those who like to be entertained while hiking, here is an outdoor-related list. I rank those I've read.

I do admit that while hiking in the high sierras, the hike is too intense for me to listen to audiobooks. Takes too much concentration. I find it easier to do the listening on easy hiking in training seasons or while walking around the block. Some of my friends though do listen to audiobooks on the JMT or HST. I do find my last day hiking down to Whitney Portal I do listen to an audiobook that day.

The two best places to get audiobooks are http://www.audible.com or your public library web site, either downloadable audiobooks there or get the CD and rip them to your Ipod using any such programs such as Itunes, Easy Cd Extractor or Tunebite Platinum.

dang, that is quite a list. I was pretty surprised by this.
Do people normally listen to music or audiobooks while hiking?
Personally, I've never tried it, but couldn't imagine it being for me.

Sid, it depends on the physical intensity of the hike. On the JMT, I only have the energy to listen to music while backpacking about 1 out of 3 or 4 days, the other days I hike without music. I only have the energy to listen to audiobooks about 2 days of the hike after I've built myself up after about 20-some days. One of my hiking partners listen to audiobooks every day on the JMT. I do listen to audiobooks while hiking alone on training hikes which are not as intense. I also listen to audiobooks while walking my dog in the city. You get your best listen while walking by the way.

I've never really listened to audiobooks, but looking at your list, if you haven't heard of him, you might like stuff by Stephen Hunter.

If you've seen the movie "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg, that's his book "Point of Impact"

The prequel to that (same character and my favorite) is "Time to Hunt". It's basically a fictionalized version of USMC Scout Sniper School founder Carlos Hathcock's time in Vietnam.

"Pale Horse Coming" is another favorite. The protagonist is the father of the character played by Mark Wahlberg.

If you like gritty detective novels, set in NYC, then check out Lawrence Blocke's: Mathew Scudder detective series. I bring them on my camping trips (actual paperbacks).

I'm not sure if they offer them on audiobooks, but they should definitely have the Stephen Hunter stuff.

Thanks Scott. I have one audiobook by Hunter but I have not heard it yet: "Stephen Hunter-2007-The 47th Samurai". I'll add your items to my try-out list. Sounds good, I enjoyed the movie. I have heard one of Block's books, The Hit Man. It was okay. Have not heard any of the Matthew Scudder books yet, but have one to listen to: "Lawrence Block-2005-Matthew Scudder Series 16-All the Flowers Are Dying". I'll give it a try too.

I just finished "Louis L'Amour-1986-Last of the Breed" and it was fantastic, especially for mountain hiking. It is a contemporary novel, not a western and takes place in the Siberian mountains. The reviews have many saying it's his best book. It's the only one I've read by him and it was just fantastic. Too bad he died before he could do a sequel to it.

haha.. I liked the Hitman books. I especially like how nothing really happens, but he's just hanging out. Not sure why. If's sort of along the same lines with the Matthew Scudder series, but a bit more happens. You may not be too thrilled.

Joeseph Boyden's "Three Day Road" is excellent as well. Based on actual persons. I'll let you google the synopsis, lest someone think I'm some war freak. Excellent read though.

I just finished reading Steven Ambrose's (Band of Brothers) "Undaunted Courage" about Lewis and Clark. Not fun fiction read, but talk about adventure. I'm amazed no one died on the expedition.

I'll check out that l'amour book. I"ve heard of him but never read anything. "Cold Mountain" (yup movie with Jude Law) is good too.

The Ken Follett books that you listed are good reading too.

Are these e-books expensive?

I get about 1/2 of my audiobooks from the public library so that is only the cost of your taxes. The other 1/2 come from audible.com and their platinum plan is the best, you get 25 audiobooks for $225 (about $9) apiece, not bad, considering some audiobooks are up to 50 hours long (not many that long).
