The lightest down pillow I am finding online is around 5 ounces from WM. I do not like the feel of inflatable pillows and am thinking of making my own.

For materials would it be best to use Momentum 0.9 oz Ultralite Ripstop or Teffeta and 900FP down from Thru Hiker?

Go with the Momentum if you are a drooler.

There is basically no difference in the feel of the Momentum taffeta and ripstop. Go with whatever color you want...

I just threw together a pillow using a standard piece of copy paper as a pattern (8.5 x 11"), and 1.5 oz of 800 fill down. Here is the results:






This is a 750mL Nalgene - about the same height as a regular quart size.

I think a back sleeper could use it fine, but as a side sleeper, I'd want more height. It would be fine if you had something about 4" high to put it on, but otherwise, more down would be needed.

How much does that prototype weigh? I am a stomach sleeper, so thickness for me is not really a big deal. I sleep on a really thin pillow at home.

I will take a pillow from you. Do you think if you made it a little bigger it would still be at or under 2 ounces? Maybe 10x14? If it would not be at or under 2 oz, I will give the 8.5x11 one a go.

I haven't gotten the details worked out on a side sleeper version yet. It may work out really good to put one of these down pillows on top of something like a Kooka-Bay pillow for height. Half air, half down.

Another possible option for a side sleeper version could be to make the pillow so clothing could be added. You could add two very loose fitting pieces of material on the back that over lap a little around half way. Then a folded shirt, jumper, etc could be added to bulk it up. The fabric pocket would need to be loose enough to stop it squeezing the down when something was inserted. Then you could have a thicker pillow that still had the softness and moldability of down on the top.

I may have to knock one up next time I get some down in to see if it helps solve my pillow woes.

Just for thought, the WM pillow uses 3.5 ounces of down. My poofy down vest uses that much down... & weighs a little less than the pillow. So I just carry the vest; gives me insulation if I need it, & a pillow at night (it's nothing to put it in a tiny sil sack).
