What Pack on 08/26/2006 02:16:20 MDT Print View

G'Day
Im fairly new to hiking and have chosen the light path. Its not as popular in Australia so i'm after some advice. Im after a pack for overnight hikes 35l capacity. As i do a bit of cascading it has to survive sliding along the odd rock. Also i still like the comfort of a good harness. As im not into extream ultralight im happy for the pack to be 1kg and not to expensive too.
Thanks for you help

If you are not into extreme ultralight and want a pack that is built like a brick "you know what" house, plus can carry a lot of weight if required, and have excellent load transfer...than I would seriously look at the Arcteryx Needle 35.

light but sturdy on 08/26/2006 11:20:35 MDT Print View

A line of packs that are lightweight, very intelligently designed, but still "built to last" from sturdy materials are here:

www.ula-equipment.com

They get rave reviews and are reasonably priced. The guy who created them believes in lightweight philosophy but also believes that a pack should last for years: not just for one trip or one summer. Thus he uses no silnylon, spinnaker cloth, cuben fiber, or other ultra-minimalist materials. (Nothing against these materials but they don't seem like they would be suited to the poster's needs.)

Second ULA. I have two of their packs and they are some of the best built packs around. And reasonably priced too. Brian is out of the office though between Aug.-Nov. of this year.
