I'm going to be doing this route as well sometime this summer. Probably sometime in august as I have to be back for school in September. I wouldn't mind having another body out there, or a small group of 3-4. Let me know if you guys are interested.
Hoping to finish in about 15 days give or take a few.
Also, from what I was told, an Ursack will work for everything except the last day or two when you'll need a canister.

I for one would be happy to get a dialogue going to see what might come about! I've been digging around and planning and plotting this route for a while.

My two questions now pretty much revolve around some of the "fun" stufff! Mainly, getting some feedback on some fishing info, and possibly some of the cooler side excrusions, or peak bagging possibilities. I feel that mileage will be doable at 15/day avg, and the advantage of living in Idaho at elevation will help with acclimization. Of course sometimes all that goes out the window, but one can only plan! and hope for the best!
I've got a base weight aobut 10lbs even with a bear cannister, so I'd be very interested in what the specific rules are about that? Skurka's site mentioned that they were required, but I'm not from the area.
Lots of stuff to discuss and work out over the winter!

Well I went ahead and purchased Skurka's mapset for the SHR. He really has done an amazing job. My route that I had done in TOPO matched up really well with what he did as well. What I really liked is the data book, and the addtional notes that comes from taking Ropers book page by page and gleaning the notes. That does save a lot of time. Can't beat the price as well. I'll enjoy combing thru all the minute details this winter! Highly recommended to all who are thinking about doing the SHR

I will be attempting the SHR starting September 1st 2011 north to Tuolumne Meadows and then follow the Tahoe Yosemite Trail home to Lake Tahoe.
Duration 30 to 45 days weather permiting (here's to HOPE)
Kings Canyon - Puite Pass - Bishop 7 Days resupply in Bishop
Piute Pass - Red's Meadow 7 Days resupply at Red's Meadow (Mammoth if Red's is closed)
Red's Meadow - Tuolumne Meadows 7 Days resupply at Tuolumne Meadows (Lee Vinning if Tuolumne is closed)
Tuolumne Meadows - Kennedy Meadows 7 Days resupply at Kennedy Meadows (Sonora if Kennedy Meadows is closed)
Kennedy Meados to Lake Tahoe 10 days

I will be attempting to cover 10+- miles a day

Base weight 13 pounds

2 pounds per day of food

Bear Vault 450 for the Bears/RANGERS with an Ursack for overflow.

Wow that was a mouth full....
A couple of issues/concerns late season + high country, might = ?snow? I will have to do my home work and find exit pass's if it hits the fan.
The resuplly points most likely will be closed as the hike goes on...
Just wanted to keep thinking out loud, thanks for listening

more planning on 01/12/2011 13:03:04 MST Print View

Well,
seems like with the New Year the urge to start the planning in earnest begins! Was wondering about what the snowpack has been like in the Sierra, and if there have been any projections for the rest of the season.

I've put together my own databook aka Skurka style to begin my planning for the route. I'm looking at 14 & 14, which means 14 days with 14 miles a day avg. Including short day getting out of Roads End, and then longer day where there was a 15mi stretch of the JMT for example. (contact me if you would like to look at my data for your own plan)Thinking along those lines gives me reasonable mileage, but hopefully time for soaking it in. Also am hoping that I can stick with 1.5lbs food per day. Usual hikes I'm really only at one pound a day and Im fine. This extra effort I think will require more.

Next items to begin to finalize will be dates, and the logistic shuttle. All that will depend on snow pack.

Looking forward to hearing everyones plan as they come together!

I'm fairly certain I want to do a section of it solo this summer as well. I'd love to go all the way but will likely only have 7-8 days; I doubt I could do it that fast.

I'm also just laying low right now, mainly waiting to get a sense of the snowpack before I start locking in dates; fortunately I've got 2 months of schedule flexibility.
I'll keep posting here as we get closer.

Are you two planning on bringing a PLB? If so which one?

I am not planning on taking one. I will leave a detailed itinerary with my wife, including a track file with waypoints etc from TOPO of my intended route etc. This is something I do for all my trips now. After an unexcpected helo ride years ago from the side of Rainier, she insisted on more info... :) this is a great way to do that.
