Weight of ULA Hip Belt on 11/07/2010 17:14:30 MST Print View

Anyone know the weight of the ULA replacement Hip Belt with pockets (Medium would be best but happy to know weight of any size)?

How does it compare with the weight of the hip belt on the GG Mariposa or Gorilla (which doesn't come with pockets attached)?

10.35oz

Gossamer Gear Mariposa Plus is currently inbound as we speak. I going to try the hipster fanny pack instead of the optional hip-belt pockets.

I can give you the actual weights of both the large and medium GG hip-belts on Wednesday.

GG website lists belt weight as 3oz?

thanks, really appreciate it on 11/07/2010 19:32:29 MST Print View

Thanks Michael. Someone PMed me that the Medium GG hip belt weighed in at 3.8 ounces. Large is likely just a little more. Really appreciate it.

I have a mariposa plus with an older ULA belt instead of the stock GG one. I would say it weighs a few more ounces than the original but is much more comfortable when carrying loads over 20lbs. I can't really notice the extra weight when its worn, I would actually say it feels lighter because of the comfort. Its also nice to be able to throw all your denser items like electronics into the pockets so the pack doesn't pull as much. Can probably get a pound or two off the back and onto the hips.

Given that the Mariposa Plus belt doesn't have pockets (GG sells them as add-ons), and the ULA does, the weight difference is likely very big when you factor this in.

I'm going to try and use the hipster fanny pack, instead of the GG hip-belt pockets for the time being. The only problem I can see with the hipster is taking it off and then losing it.
Where as with hip-belt pockets they're always attached so no worries. I usually keep Aqua Mira and a head-lamp in these pockets, and more important items too, So it would be a big deal, if I lost these items while using the hipster.

I guess its a neat idea to use a ULA belt on a GG pack, but if I needed better load support for heavier loads, I'd probably just get a ULA Circuit or Catalyst pack, which although heavier than the Mariposa plus, it would also carry 30-35lbs with better comfort overall, IMHO, anyway.
These Ultra-lightweight packs are great, but I think if I were ever lucky enough to be able to pull off a Thru-Hike, I'd be using my McHale LBP36, close second would be a ULA Catalyst followed by the Circuit, then a GG Mariposa Plus, and possibly a Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone. All of these packs share one common trait, in that the hip-belts are all interchangeable, So when and "if" you shed those extra pounds, you could go with a smaller hip-belt. The Nimbus Ozone stands alone here as the only pack with interchangeable shoulder straps. Also with the McHale pack, you would need to have a smaller hip-belt pre-made before your trip and ship it ahead as needed.
