I have a old synthetic bag I was thinking about turing into a quilt. I was just planning on cutting the hood off, removing the zipper and then sewing the open parts back together.

Is there a better way of doing this, anywhere I should look online? Also I have NO sewing experience, my wife's mom is pretty good so she might be able to teach me, but am I getting in over my head?
